Pushing yourself

I have a question regarding pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, in order to be faster and fitter. I hope I am making sense here.

So I am training for an upcomming race (in 3 weeks...ick! my stomach hurts! LOL) and I am have one speed training day a week and 1 hill training..with many other days of course. I find I am pushing myself harder on those 2 days then any other, for obvious reasons.
There are better days then others of course, like anything. So today I ran on the TM but didn't go as fast or climb as high as I did the last time. Probably b/c it was 6 in the morning, instead of in the afternoon.
DO you still think you get gains from this? Im pushing myself to the point where I want to throw up a couple of times but yet Im not going as fast as I went last week, nor am I climbing as I? Do you still get gains? Is pushing yourself, still pushing yourself regardless of last weeks time?
I would like to do good in this race and today when getting ready for work, I opened up the drawer with my certificate and time from my last race and I remembered how well I did. I placed 66 out of over 1000 females. I wanted to do this up comming race just to say I did it but now looking at my other certificate, I would like to atleast finish in the 100's b/c there are only 400 people racing. This race is much longer though and much tougher.

Yes I think that you will still make gains. I am a big fan of Long, slow, distance training. That is what most of my w/outs consist of. I do throw in a tempo and a speedwork day. The LSD is helping me stay healthy. Good luck on your race. I have a half in 2 weeks. What race are you doing?

Its called the Cape to Cabot race. Its only the 2nd yr for it. Its 20km long, only 3kms of flat and ends at the biggest hill you could imagine;) Im not sure what I got myself into! LOL I still run distance a few times a week but I need to get those hills there. Im hoping that my pushing a stroller when running outside will also help!

Lori:)

I bet pushing the stroller will most definitley help!
I don't worry about hill running anymore. That is all my neighborhood is so running flat is always a nice surprise for me! Good luck with your race!
