Push Up Question

I've heard Cathe suggest modifying pushups by doing them on dumbbells, but I wonder if doint so alters the effectiveness of the exercise in any way. For some reason when I do pushups without the weights, my hands slip and slide and I end up on my face. With the weights, I can keep pace just fine. Of course I'm really clumsy so it's no real surprise! I just wanted to know if getting any benefit from the exercise with the modification.

I am pretty confident that it gives the same benefit, but it keeps the wrist in a safer position and also allows you to go a bit deeper into the pushup without your face getting so close to the floor.
