Puppy Update - Gizmo

Cathlete
I'm happy to report that Gizmo, Macy and Amber are all getting along wonderfully. That's the good news. The bad news is that we took Gizmo in for another set of shots today and his jaw is completely infected where it was broken (severly infected according to the vet - and it looked disgusting!!!). I kept telling DH that I thought Gizmo's breath was the worst I've ever noticed and he kept saying it's just puppy breath. And you can't look in his mouth to save the little guy's life. He won't hear of it. The Shelter vet told us he was all healed, so we thought all was well.

The Shelter vet said that if we have any trouble at all to bring him back in and he'll work on the little guy. Well...our Shelter has just gone through a terrible case of kennel cough and now they think they have influenza and will have to completely shut down temporarily. So they called the Shelter vet to see if he could treat Gizmo elsewhere and they now think the vet has hepatits B! Can you believe their luck??? And they need him badly right now with all they're going through.

So...the Shelter said they would pay for whatever Gizmo needs (he might need surgery according to the vet today). Of course we wouldn't make them do that - I can't imagine what all their current problems are costing them. So sad.

This poor puppy has had such a rough start in life. And you'd never know it. He doesn't act like he's been kicked hard enough in the face to break his jaw in two places. And as for his current condition - you'd never know that either. He eats like a little piggy and he plays and plays and plays. I have pretty strong feelings about where I hope people go who abuse helpless animals.

Thanks for listening!

Susan

What a poor little guy, Susan....he is so lucky to have found such a super mommy. Keep us posted, I will send lots of prayers to all the doggies I know that are looking down on us from the opposite place that all animal abusers go.....to put in a good word for Gizmo for a speedy recovery.

I hope it's a good thing that your post about Gizmo is making me cry. What a wonderful little guy, and what a lucky match between him and you! I'm so sorry he's got an infection.

Thanks for knowing in advance we wanted the update. Please excuse me now, I have to go and find my babies and kiss their fuzzy little faces. :* :)

So sorry to hear about his injury. I can't stand for animals to be hurt or sick. It broke my heart to picture Amber crying after her blood donation. Thank God Gizmo has you and your DH. Know you'll get him fixed up and this will all be behind you. Keep us posted.

Susan....I cannot tolerate any kind of animal abuse...it makes me sick. I sure would like to try my roundhouse kick on whoever kicked Gizmo!! Sounds like such a loving puppy, he has a great home now and I hope he heals up good. Keep us posted...:)

Susan, you're an angel from heaven! Finding you was the luckiest day in poor little Gizm's life. I'll keep the little guy in my prayers and hope that his infection clears without residual damage.

I'm with Carole - a good knee smash and groin kick will show those &#$^%#$#@(@@!!! animal abusers what's what! How could anyone kick such a sweet face?! Susan - you are wonderful. I'm glad Gizmo has you to care for him. He deserves you after all he has been through!

I'm glad the other dogs and he are getting along well. He'll be my prayers, too. Hope he heals quickly!

Even though Gizmo still has a bit of a hard time ahead of him dealing with the infection, sounds like he's having a great time with you.

Christine, I think you are Carole are FAR too lenient with the perpetrator. Of course, what I would like to do to him is quite illegal!

It's good to know that Gizmo's past abuse hasn't seemed to affect his personality. There's a great dane at the shelter I volunteer at who was adopted by the shelter manager and is unofficial 'greeter' at the shelter, who cowers in fear whenever she sees a man wearing a hat (otherwise, she is friendly and sweet, and even want to be foster 'mom' to some kittens!)

It just breaks my heart to hear about animal abuse:-( You ladies are so right. Gizmo is lucky to have found a wonderful home. I only hope karma takes care of the @ss $&!$ that did that to him.

I am so happy they are all getting along!! I bet they are fun to watch!! I feel so bad for him that he has an infection but I am so happy he has you!!;-) Have fun!!

People who abuse children and animals have very serious problems in my books. Those are two things that disgust me!

I hope everything works out.Geez..who would have thought? You would think that he would have been under the weather or something.Prehaps he so use to being in pain that he doesn't know it!
Im sure he realizes what a wonderful home he as now! Keep us updated.

Hi Susan,

You guys are awsome. Just continue what you can for this wonderful little puppy. Things will look up, just as soon as he has more surgery. And continue with what you've been doing. Loving him, and taking care of him.

Please update us on him, I'd like to know Gizmos future.

Susan, I feel for you & Gizmo. I hope you get rid of this infection as easily as possible. You sound like a very responsible person for dealing with him & not making the shelter pay for it. My own Chico also had a fractured jaw when I got him. He was so stoic but very skinny & pathetic looking. I just fell in love with him. He now has a happy life.

I love the pic of all 3 dogs sticking their tongue out. How cute! Keep us updated.

Thanks you guys! You're all so kind! He's pretty easy to love. :)

I should know more Monday after they put him under and clean it all out. They'll either have to just pull his teeth there or do reconstructive surgery. It's up in the air. I feel awful because we're leaving town Thursday to help out at my Dad's so he'll have to be boarded. But our vet also has a boarding facility so at least he can stay there and they can take good care of him.

Marla - his little tongue sticks out all the time. I guess because of the break. It's adorable. We thought it would be a cute picture with everyone's tongues out. Amazing what a little peanut butter will do. :)

I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for your interest.
