Pull up program

My 3 goals in fitness are to

run 5 miles at once (did 4 1/2 today!)

complete the push up challenge....I think I can do 3 real ones right now!?!

but the 3rd is the scariest...just one, once before I die, I'd like to do a completely unassisted pull up!!!!! Does anyone know of a program to work up to a successful pull-up? I'm not sure I could even free hang right now!

Thanks for any info!

Becky

Hi Becky,

I'm working on this, too. Pavel's "Grease the Groove" technique (which can be used for more than pullups) is intriguing to me. I just have to figure out how to shoehorn a pullup tower in my office. :)

ETA: If you can't do any unassisted, you might want to use some bands for assistance. That'll help.

Pullups...

P90X is the program that has worked for me to do pullups!! I can do wide grip, close grip, chinups (hands in) etc. If you can't do a full pullup, you can use a chair for assistance. Stand on the chair & use it to get your chin over the bar, hold for a second, and then lower down as slowly as you can. (negatives) Do as many reps as you can, rest, and try again. You'll really engage the muscles that you need for pullups and build up the strength to do them. Chinups are easiest for most people since you use your biceps more.

You can do it!

ITA!! I never even thought about doing pull-ups until I bought P90X and was FORCED to do them;) I think they are a lot like push-ups...you just gotta do them or attempt to do them in order to build up the strength you need. Like Cathe mentions with the levitation holds in CoreMax, any attempt will still challenge your muscles so use bands or a chair to assist yourself up and work the negative without assistance when you are ready.

You can do this!

Seriously, pullups and chinups do awesome things for the upper body. Even just doing negatives or assisted ones really work the back and upper body.

So Catherine, where does one start at home? When I had a PT I used to do them at the gym on that machine -- I can't think of what it's called but it assists you. They show one in Cathe's STS clips.

I don't have a door gym. I have bands and tubing though, but not woody bands. Can I use this stuff?

I think it's called a gravitron??

Do you have a bar or just the bands/tubing?

I think there's an attatchment you can get to hook your tubing up to do pulldowns. But I've never used it. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I think it's gonna be a while before Cathe's pullup tower is available :(
