protien shakes

Hi, everyone. I'm fairly new to the website. I have been trying to drink a whey protien shake after my workouts once or twice a day. I
mix the protien shake with six oz. of skim milk and sometimes add a
low fat yogurt for additional flavor. Can someone please tell me if
this will help me to gain muscle or possibly make me gain weight?
Thanks, Chedieboo.:9

You have to take into account the calorie intake that it shows on the container. I mix mine with only water in a blender ( vanilla or chocolate), and one serving is 120 cal with 20 g of protein. Like anything else, if you add a lot of ingredients, be careful of the total calorie count and count it towards your daily intake or you will gain weight.

Protein shakes per se aren't what you typically need "post workout"...you need something that is 4 parts carbohydrates and 1 part protein. Those that are in liquid form are called "recovery drinks". It's true that you need appropriate amounts of protein in your diet to help in muscle growth but you don't necessarily need it right after you workout. If you've had a really intense workout (and I don't drink recovery drinks after every workout...just those that I've really expended ALL of my energy) you need the carbs to replenish your glycogen stores...protein doesn't do this. I swear by the P90X recovery drink sold on beachbody.com...it is SOOOOO TASTY!!!!! I swear it's the reason I work out some days :D :D !!

A comparison to the recovery drink would be a piece of fruit and some yogurt. I'm sure other people have great post exercise examples. In addition the protein drink you're describing probably carries enough calories to be deemed a "meal" so be careful how you are incorporating them into your daily diet...especially if weight loss is a goal of yours.
