Protein vs. Kidneys

Let me just post the conclusion:

"Conclusions: High protein intake was not associated with renal function decline in women with normal renal function. However, high total protein intake, particularly high intake of nondairy animal protein, may accelerate renal function decline in women with mild renal insufficiency. "

Most of us by far do not have to worry about eating too much protein if we have normal functioning kidneys in the first place.

I took a basic Nutrition class this past Summer. I'm no expert but our book said you can get have kidney problems with excessive amounts of protein.
The amount of protein recommended by the DRI committee is "0.8gram for each kilogram (or 2.2pds.) of body weight. The minimum amt. is set at 10% of total calories. Athletes may need slightly more according to authorities other than the DRI committee, but the increased need is well covered by a regular diet." I did find a section in the book Nutrition Concepts and Controversies that "power athletes (strength or speed) need 1.6-1.7 (g/kg/day) these recommendations are from a joint position paper from the ADA and Dietitians of Canada.
I hope this helps.
