Protein Shakes

I have been hearing a lot about protein shakes and I know Cathe used them while filming the Intensity Series. Do any of you use them? What types are good? I am lactose intolerant so that is a consideration.

Thanks,

Rhonda :D

I like EAS Myoplex Lite it has only 5g of carbs and 30g of protein. I usually add bananas, strawberries, etc. with some crushed ice and blend it in the blender and that really fills me up. You can find at GNC or order it direct from EAS.com (which is cheaper to order direct by bulk) or if you want to try it first then you can buy them in singles from GNC.

Hi Rhonda! I use ProBlend55. Comes in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. I has 55g of protein. Don't know if this one would be suitable for you though. You'd have to check it out and see. But all you do is mix 8-10 oz. of water w/any type of fruit that you like & ground flaxseed (if you prefer) and blend. Very thin consistency and tasty too! Kathy

I use Spirutein, which has no milk or eggs. I use the vanilla, which is delicious, and I mix it into Vanilla Silk or juice depending on my mood.

There are several good soy-based protein mixes available. Spirutein was already mentioned. Mothersoy makes "Essential soy protein"" (available through dixiediner.com, as well as some health food stores and co-ops). EP is unflavored, and works well mixed in a smoothie or blended with juice. I've also tried Revival soy (which, in addition to having 20+ grams of protein per 12-16 oz serving, tastes good mixed just with water, and has the same isoflavone content as 6 servings of regular soy milk. It is available thorough revivalsoy.com

When you mix it with fruit juice is it like a fruit smoothie and like a milk shake when mixed with soy milk? Do you use it to take the place of a meal, as a suppliment, or a snack? How does it fit into your food plan. I feel like a complete novice in this area?

Thanks,

Rhonda

Hi Rhonda! Its Meal 6 of the day for me. Just saw your other post re calorie content. I'm at work and will post it here tomorrow for you. Best, Kathy

I use it as a supplement, but always do it immediately post-workout, because I heard somewhere that that is when your body really makes best use of the extra protein, right after the muscles have been "damaged" by the weight work. I don't do it after cardio.

Your right on about the consistency (smoothie vs. milk shake). I use protein shakes as one of my snacks (either pre-or post-workout) or as a breakfast, when I'm in a pinch (which I haven't done for a while).
