Protein Powder

Hi Gals,

I was wondering what kind of protein powder everyone drinks...if any? I am going to try and eat the BFL way and I know that if I drink a couple of protein drinks a day, then that would be two meals I wouldn't have to worry about.
I do have some protein powder home now but I am not sure how much is left.I was browsing a web site and I found a EAS protein powder that seemed to be pretty reasonable but then I decided not to order it.
What does everyone look for? Most of the powders that were there were low in carbs, is this a good thing or bad thing?
Any suggestions? Also, does anyone drink BetaGen? I bought it once before but I don't recall getting any results from it...but man did it ever taste good. Its a bit pricey though, around $69
Thanks,
Lori:)

I have always used Designer Whey Protein powder. A bodybuilder I used to work out with suggested it years ago and it's the only one I can drink without it gagging me or making me feel bloating like some do. I like the strawberry. It has 90 calories and 17.5 grams of protein per scoop. I mix it with water in a blender to make it frothy and put ice in it. It costs about $25 at the local GNC for a 12 oz canister.

I like PVL whey gourmet. It is $21.99 for a 2 pound tub. It has aroung 23 gr of protein per serving and comes in many flavors. I get it at http://www.a1nutritionproducts.com/buy/pvl/whey_gourmet. Also, Optimun Nutrition has whey protein for $13.49 at www.vitacost.com.( I love vanilla icecream flavor) It has aroung 24 gr of protein per serving. Both brands taste very good.

Your choice of protein powder depends on a few things:

1. Are you sensitive to any of the different types of protein (soy, whey, egg)?

I am sensitive to milk of any kind. I am also sensitive to soy products. I am sensitive to ALL kinds of crap and so I had to try all the different types of protein as well as different BRANDS. So, if you have a sensitive stomach, you may have to try a few to find what works.

2. How do you plan to use it? Do you plan to drink it plain (as a shake)? With added fruit/yogurt? Or add it to other food (oatmeal, cereal, etc)?

If you plan to drink it as a shake -- will you have a blender handy or do you need to mix it without one? Many of the protein powders on the market suck if you're trying to mix them without a blender. So you'll want to look for one that mixes well without a blender if you're gonna take that route. If this is your choice...let me know and I can look up the name of the one I used to use. If adding to oatmeal...mixing isn't quite as important because eventually all of them will work given enough stirring.

3. Do you want a POWDER or would a RTD (ready-to-drink) work better? I have switched almost exclusively to RTDs. One of my favorite things to do is pour a RTD shake over cereal (instead of using milk). I love Ultimate Nutrition's Pure Protein (banana or vanilla). 35 grams of protein -- less than 200 calories in one shake.

4. Are you using it as a meal replacement or a protein supplement? If it is a meal replacement -- and you are not adding it to something (like cereal or oatmeal) -- or adding fruit/yogurt to it ... then I would suggest going with something that has some carbs in it. Otherwise, go for the no carb option (as you're getting carbs from the other items you're eating with it).

So it's much more than just what tastes reasonably good or what is cheapest. Figure out how you plan to use it and that will narrow down the best options a bit.

EAS BetaGen (if that's what you're talking about) isn't a protein powder/supplement. It is a creatine supplement. That may explain your lack of results :)
