Protein Powder, does it really do anything?

I've been using Whey Protein for a couple of years now and to be honest with you I can't tell that it's done anything for me except add a couple hundred calories to my intake each day. How 'bout you. Does protein powder, or for that matter...protein bars, do anything positive for your body?
 
I have been doing a definition type workout and eating a high protein, low fat diet. For the past 6 weeks. I can tell that I'm getting a lot more muscle mass now that I'm eating more protein, compared to when I did similar kinds of strength workouts without the extra protein. My muscles are much more defined now, especially in my upper body. For me, it's really helping, but it is definitely a combination of other foods as well as the protein, and working out with more strength and less cardio.
