Problem with abs and lower back - please help!

I had my baby 8 months ago. I started working out about four months ago, pretty regularly, say about three to four times a week.

The problem I have is that my ab muscles don't seem to have 'knitted' back together. If I do a sit up, I can get nearly two fingers into the gap in the middle of my abs. Is it too late to do anything about this? Are they going to be like that forever?

I'm worried because this was never 'diagnosed' and I started working out four months ago without really being aware of it - having read a post a little way down this forum, I'm wondering if I've now done irreversible damage to my abs - I've been doing crunches, the plank, and other ab work as seen in cathe dvds for the last four months.

Consequently, a) I have on-going lower back problems which I think must be related to my abs being in a weakened state despite my doing ab work three to four times a week; and b), cosmetically, if I so much as eat a piece of toast, my tummy just pops out - this 'split' in the outer abdominal wall isn't holding my tummy in so I wind up with a pot belly whenever I eat.

Can anyone help me? I hope so....

Thanks all.
