Prenatal vitamin question

Hi, I'm on prenatal vitamins because I'm trying to get pregnant. I know I'm supposed to take it on an empty stomach, so for many months now I've been taking it first thing in the morning and not eating anything for at least an hour. Well, it gives me terrible gas and very smelly burps (sorry to be gross!). So, I decided to take it at night before I go to bed. This has worked wonderfully for me. However, I happened to notice they've added a warning to the prescription bottle that says you shouldn't lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication. Does anyone know why? Thanks in advance.

Hey Anne,
I've always taken them at night right before I get ready for bed. I never knew that about not lying down afterwards, but I usually sit up and read for awhile. But sometimes I just go straight to bed. They always have upset my stomach too if I take them in the a.m.

Good luck TTC!!

And PS ... Don't worry about being gross-- Gas sadly goes hand in hand with pregnancy--regardless of the vitamins! LOL

Anne, I never knew to take them on an empty stomach. I take one with every meal!!! Ditto about Stephanie's PS - you're gonna find out waaaaaay grosser things about being pg than gas! LOL!!!

I literally laughed out loud. DH is sitting here beside me shaking his head in disbelief that I get so much pleasure out of this website!

Hi Anne - I just found I'm preg. About 5 weeks. I have been take a prenatal vitamin - prescribed by my doctor. But I take, one in the am and one in the pm. It comes in a neat package, designated am pills and designated pm pill. I also, take it with my meals, and haven't had any problems. I wonder if taking a prenatal vitamin that divides the vitamins and minerals out would be easier on your stomach.
Good Luck :)

Thanks Kate!
Yep its my first. It wasn't planned, but we are very excited.
So, I think I'm finally getting over the 'surprise'.

Just went to the doctors yesterday - got the baby's first photograph! Though, I had to ask the doctor "where is it?". We think he/she is pretty photogenic...he..he..he

Thanks, everybody. Taking it at night has worked so much better for me, I'm glad I don't have to change it. I can't believe how long it took me to figure out to do that! Oh, well. Thank you again.

I always took mine before bed, and not on an empty stomach. Never knew I was doing all the wrong. Also wanted to add, if you have a Marsh in your area, not sure where you are from that they will fill a prenatal prescription for 1 year for free. Some new promotion that they are doing to try to encourage the use of prenatals during pregnancy.

Just wanted to add my pharmacist two cents:

Iron is better absorbed on an empty stomach. If it upsets your stomach, it's perfectly fine to take it with food. If your PNV upsets your stomach & your tempted not to take it, I'd encourage you to try different formulations,...you may find one that you can tolerate more easily. The absolute essentials is having folic acid in 1st trimester & calcium in 3rd trimester. If you tend to be constipated, ask your pharmacist for a PNV with a stool softner in it. Drink lots of water and that will help with any irritation. As far as laying down afterwards, that has to do with the irritation of the tummy or heartburnish feeling we sometimes get with vitamins.

Good luck. :)

They even make chewable prenatal vitamins. I had to take those when swallowing even half of a vitamin at a time would make me throw up. I even had to resort to Flintstone gummies for a short time. My doctor wanted to make sure I got the folic acid.

Hi,
I take cheweable prenatals that are prescribed to me. But, my dr. also said that 2 Flinstones were fine too. I have taken both types in the past.
