Posting E-Mail Addresses in The Forums

Cathlete
I noticed many Cathe-ites posted their e-mail addresses in the Open Discussion forum, especially those who wanted LunaCat's delectable Compendium.

Just a cautionary note:

We never know what freaks and geeks are trolling commercial forums, especially when you do not need to register to view posts. I posted my e-mail address a couple of times on this and another open-viewing forum, and now, every week, I get these bizarre, badly-spelled e-mails asking for money for some Liberian refugee, or promising me a million dollars if I just send in a $159.00 processing fee, or what have you.

Just a suggestion: we can trust each other, but we can't trust the lurkers who have keyboards. Please be careful where you post your e-mail addresses, or you too could be hit up for money for a Tanzanian ocelot liberation fund.

I gave money to those Tanzanian Ocelots JUST LAST WEEK!!! You mean it's not real? Oh boy, do I ever feel dumb;)

I agree. I'm always hesitant about posting my e-mail address anywhere that is accessible to the masses. Good advice Aquajock. Thanks!

Oops! You mean I wasn't supposed to sign you all up for the Ocelot Fund? I'm sure if you just send them $100.00 they'll leave you alone!

Aquajock makes a great point! If you need to give someone your email address, PM them with it.

Thanks Aquajock!

Thanks alot Annette. Now I'll have to find a new source of email addresses for my cyberstalking habit.

Seriously your post is true........I know many members have even de-activated their profiles b/c they were receiving inappropriate messages from other members. Very sad.

Aquajock makes a good point! I have several email addresses, one for work, a personal email, and one for shopping/junk email. I only post my junk email address on forums because who knows what wierdo is lurking around all these websites. I too have gotten strange things in my junk email address and I immediately delete anything that looks foreign. So please get different email addresses for different purposes!

I don't think posting an e-mail is any worse that not. I have had spam on all my e-mails and I don't give them all out. So if they are going to get it there are other ways of getting an e-mail.

I know it will make it easier for people to see but we get just as many spam (asking for money, etc) on both e-mails.

Just my opinion, and I'm sure there are people who will disagree,

Good point, A-Jock. I also worry when I see threads where people want to get to know everybody, so they post personal info. Maybe too much personal info at times, that would allow a child molester or a pervert or some tweak to find them and/or their family.

By the way, A-Jock, would you care to contribute to the "save the sphagnum moss" fund? Just send me $200.;-)

I have to comment. I asked about this, and was told they wanted to keep the same thread. I asked why not have them pm you but... that did not fly. I had no story to tell but when I saw what was going on I thought, you don't what to hear what I said to myself.

I mean, what's a PM and em for if not to get in touch in private with each other. If we were to have our em's out there, they would.

DAhhhhh.

So, how do we delete our email address's now that the delete time has lapsed? The compendium is great work by the way, isn't it?:D

I have to agree with Rhonda. As soon as I registered as a buyer/seller on Ebay in 2002, the spam has not stopped since. Just shopping or banking on any site has second and third companies picking up your info all the time. I had so much spyware last year it's amazing my computer didn't crash. And that was prior to ever disclosing any of my email info on this website. That was with the firewall and spyware software I already had installed. The spam finds you somehow.
