LAST EDITED ON May-01-01 AT 05:03PM (Est)[p]i just got a brand new Polar heart rate monitor yesterday and i can tell right away i dont like wearing a watch or checking it all the time.
i do well enough tracking myself with "percieved exertion"

I got it from:

http://www.elitebicycle.com/Catalog/Heart Rate Monitors/Heart Rate Monitors_products.htm

they will take it back and charge me a 15% restocking fee.

Would anyone care to benefit from my loss and buy it from me for $125. + insured shipping?

Are You Sure?

I LOVE my HR monitor!! Not that it means YOU have to LOVE yours! I am just curious. Have you set it for the alarm to tell you if you are working too hard or not hard enough? I never look at mine unless the alarm goes off indicating either way (of course if it is because I am working above my entered #, I know it!!!) I just love to know that I am working in "MY ZONE". I don't mean to persuade you to keep it~just wondering if you shouldn't give it a chance or two more?? Okay, I'll quit being your MOM!!:7

RE: Are You Sure?

you can be my mom!!

the first thing i found on the monitor is that my heart rate is already excellent ..... and would be excellent for someone 25 years younger than me ... So i have been doing a great job of keeping it healthy without ever worrying about tracking my heart.

That made me proud!

the second thing i found is that i can tell how hard i am working without looking at the watch just fine, the watch only confirms what i can intuit pretty well...

the watch tells me i am way over my limit when i am not ... so i really would need to be my own monitor when pushing it.

I really was curious to study my fat burning....
This monitor tells me i do my best fat burning in the lower part of my range... I have no trouble staying in the right range without checking.
I am disappointed that
it only measures calories that are used while i am in my target range...
so if i take a two mile walk without really hitting the range much I dont get good information on what i have used.

I walk plenty of miles without pushing into the target range. ... and while those calories are where i really melt my fat , they wouldnt be counted on this monitor. ....and if i dont sweat nothing gets calculated at all...

I will test it for several days....
but i think i will get all the useful information i need just from testing myself for a day or two...

i was totally amazed doing a pilates workout how low the hear rate was while i was really hard!!
I kept my heart rate just as high while eating lunch and jiggling my legs!!
so i learn that that heart rate really elevates the taller you are....
and i wonder how many calories i burn while really working hard that dont get counted cause the heart rate doesnt zoom....
those muscles can really burn....

eh... its fun....but i would probably just put it away and wished i had bought some chrome dumbells instead!

Polar M52

Are you sure your HRM doesn't calculate calories burned when you are out of your range? I'm confused because I have the M52 and mine does and I'm wondering what we are doing differently. Mine displays the amount of time in my zone, but also displays calories burned for the entire time.
As far as fat burning being better in the lower range, I have read that that isn't true. Your percentage of fat burned is higher because you are burning fewer calories during your workout time. If you do a more intense workout, you will burn more calories for the same period of time so your percentage of fat burned will be lower even though you are burning the same number of fat calories. Does that make sense?
I have had a lot of trouble with my M52. My first one was defective and I am sending back my second one now because I think something is wrong with it. I have been really disappointed with it.

RE: Polar M52

i am not sure of much! i just got it and my attention span for deciphering the book is very short!!

it did seem to calculate calories during my whole body sculpting class.... I have to go back and re read the book.

i have read different stuff on what burns the fat.

in my life i do alot ...alot of moving that isnt high heart rate exercise but close to target range....(walk to work and back...walk to lunch... etc. these calories count big time for me!.... so i definately want to pay close attention to them.

sorry you have had problems with your monitor... most people love theirs.
would you love it if it worked without snags?
