Playa del Carmen Mexico??

Anyone been here? I am planning a vacation to the area and would love any recommendations on hotels. I'm still deciding whether I want to do an all inclusive but I am afraid I won't get to experience the area as much if I do that. Anyone?

Here's my answer to another poster awhile back on the subject. Hope it helps!

We've been the past 3 Februarys. Love it! It's warmer the later in February you go, but you'll still have a blast. There's a fabulous park you must go to called Xel Ha Eco Park. It's kind of expensive to get in but it's so worth it to go once. You can spend the day there. Check it out here http://www.cancuntravel.com/xelha.asp. It's just a little bit south of Playa del Carmen. In Playa there's lots of shopping and restaurants on 5th Avenue (you can just walk from one end to the other) and there's a ferry that goes over to Cozumel. You should go to the ruins in Tulum. Are you renting a car or are you staying in an all inclusive? We always rent a house in Playacar. We fly into Cancun, rent a car and drive to Playa del Carmen. Feel free to e-mail me or PM me if you have any specific questions and I'll try to answer the best I can.

I have been to Playa del Carmen, actually if you look at my picture trail at the wedding photos and the beach ones, those are in Playa del Carmen. My brother was married there. We stayed at the RIU Palace Mexico, it was all inclusive & very nice. I would go back.

Above is the website for the RIU hotels.

I have also been to the Riviera Maya, a little more south...I think. When I was there I stayed at the Adventura Palace, also all inclusive I think. That was a work trip & I believe a couple of the beach pictures (older dated ones) in my picture trail are here. This was a huge place and I liked the actual beach at Playa del Carmen better but you can't go wrong with either.

Website above for this one.

Hope that helps & have a blast!

Oh just remembered one thing...at RIU we stayed the gym was not air conditioned. I went there the first morning at like 7 AM thinking I'd get a workout in before it got too hot. About 20 minutes on the stair climber & I stopped, wasn't worth it. We were there end of May, I think... or end of June...can't remember but anyway even at 7 in the morning it is hotter than heck! I took that week off from working out! ;-)

We stayed at the Barcello resort which was a little south of Playa, but not too far that you couldn't take a taxi or shuttle into town. We also took the ferry to Cozumel ( wonderful jewelry stores!). I loved it! It was an all inclusive. We are planning on going back in Feb and trying the Riu in Playa. I can't belive a hotel chain as big as that one wouldn't have the gym air conditioned! that's crazy!

We were just there this past January and stayed in a condo just down the beach from the ferry over to Cozumel. BEAUTIFUL!!! I liked the swim up bar the best ;-) ;-)

5th Avenue is full of shops and great places to eat! If I think of anything else, I will post it, but right now I forgot names of places and restaurants for you to try.

Carlos and Charlies is right on the corner of 5th avenue up from the ferry and is sooooo fun! The waiters dance and do jokes on you and others, lots of fun!

You'll love it!
Marcia.
