Plate Mates

Hi Everyone,
I have been looking at plate mates(the hexagon shaped ones) in preparation for STS. I noticed that in the description on fwonline.com that they say they fit poured dumbbells whose end diameter is 3 1/2". I have the poured dumbbells from Dick's and none of them have an end diameter of 3 1/2", even my 25 lbs ones. Do you think they would still work?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!!

My 25# DB is 3" in diamter and the platemates fit on it fine. They also fit fine on my 10# NEOPRENE DB and that is even a tiny bit smaller in width.

I also don't know why it is said that platemates won't stick to a neoprene DB as they stick to mine!

Beth, I have both the 5/8 lb and 1 1/4 lb Hex Plate Mates and I can put them on a hex DB as small as 10lbs (the 5/8lb will even fit on a 8lb DB).

My Plate Mates will not stick to rubber capped dumbbells (the kind Cathe uses). I haven't tried them on neoprene.

Same as the others. I have used them on my 8lbers with no problem and on neoprene also. When I use it on the neoprene I always think it my not stick, so I make sure it isn't going to land on my face or something. Never had any problem. I would not replace the neoprene until you try it out. I think you will like using them.

Kara:)

I use them on my smaller (12#) dumbells as well. I don't use them on my neoprene or vinyl-coated dumbbells (I tested them to see: if I put a platemate on a metal dumbbell, I can hold the dumbbell by the Platemate and it won't fall. I can't do that with a neoprene/vinyl-coated dumbbell. While I might risk it on moves like lat rows--where if the Platemate drops it won't hit me in the face--I don't think I'll risk it on over-the-head/face moves). They probably say they aren't for neoprene-/vinyl-coated dumbbells for legal reasons, because the hold really isn't as firm as on metal, and there is more risk of dislodging them.

They don't hold on my neoprene dumbbells so please be careful on using them on yours.

I need at least one other set. Any good prices on them?

I have the 1 1/4 # Plate Mates and they do not stay on my rubber, foam or neoprene DB's. They DO stay on my rubber-coated plates that go to my Troy Lite barbell though. I have used them many times to increase my BB up to 2 1/2 #'s when trying to up my weight in small increments. They do attach to my metal 5 # DB's too but extend over somewhat so I would be leery of doing OH moves in case they fell off. Thankfully, I was able to find 3, 4, 6, 7 & 9 # DB's! I basically use my PM's for my larger DB's.
