Planning to get pregnant... need advice!

Hi,
We are thinking about starting our family... in a few months! I am about 10-15 lbs overweight, and I am working hard on losing the extra pounds. Is there any specific exercise plan you recommend for getting in shape pre-baby? My friend really recommends doing exercises to strengthen the core, which makes sense. Any other tips?
Thanks!

Hi Amy,

Any exercise you do pre-pregnancy will benefit you. The stronger your body is, the better it will be able to handle the stresses put on it by pregnancy, labor and delivery. I would definately include a good stretch in your routine and just do a nice mix of cardio and weights. I don't know that there is anything "pregnancy specific" that you should do as well though...maybe another gal here will have a suggestion. Also, if your body is used to the exercise prior to becoming pregnant, than barring any problems, your doctor should give you the blessing to continue the work out-properly modified ofcourse-once you become pregnant and that will do wonders for you!:D

Have a great work out!

Amy, you asked my very question! Today is my first time on the boards, but I've been lurking quite a bit! :) I have more weight to lose than Amy does (want to go from a size 14 to a 9/10) and we are talking about getting started on a family late this year. I noticed the workouts you all are doing during pregnancy - pretty intense stuff. So step aerobics and weight lifting are ok while carrying?

Thanks for the info!

I am planning on getting pregnant in a few months as well. I have one child already, so I do have a little experience to base my recommendations on.

I always suggested woking on upper body and core strength. You upper back, shoulders and chest will get alot of work trying to keep you upright with the extra chest and abdomen weight you put on during pregnancy. Core work is important because it also strengthens the lower back.

As was already mentioned, anything you can do now, will benefit you during pregnancy. Work hard to get off the extra weight and establish healthy eating habits now!

Good Luck,

Tina

Sort of silly responses, that contain some truth....

During labor, I kept squatting on the floor to push, then standing back up to rest on the bed. My legs weren't sore at all the next day!

Post baby, your left bicep will get quite an endurance workout as you carry your baby while trying to do your normal daily activities!

My lower back takes a beating sitting on the floor playing with my toddler.

More seriously, I would think you should just do a well rounded exercise program so as not to create any muscular imbalances.

Hi Lisa,

If your body is already used to a pretty intense work out/schedule, then yes, it is USUALLY perfectly okay to continue during pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses though, modifications DO need to be made. If you are not already exercising when you become pregnant, you usually still can start but have to be more careful in what you choose to do. Ofcourse, all of this should be ok'd by your dr regardless!:)

Have a great work out!
