Piriformus Syndrome

I am pretty sure I have it in my right hip. I am currently waiting on my x-ray and MRI but the doc is convinced. I have been regulated to walking the dog, yoga and light upper body.

I am so peeved. I fell on the ice in February. Took a couple of steps out of the car to get the mail and WHAM! In a split second I am lying on my right side staring at the gray skies of Michigan and hearing the stifling of giggles out of my DH and DS who were in the front seat. They realized when I couldn't talk and was crying that it was more serious. My hip hasn't been the same since. Flares up constantly.

I am currently on Mobid.

Anyone else ever have this affliction?????????????

Thanks, Dawn

Never have had it but have treated lots of my patients who have had it. Do lots of stretching of the piriformis (figure 4 stretch) and the hamstrings. If you have to do therapy they will most likely do ultrasound to ease the inflammation and some soft tissue massage. I would recommend investing in a foam roll to roll out the piriformis and the ITband. Hope you feel better. The best thing you can do is rest for now which i know is super hard!

Yup, its a literal pain in the a$$. Mine comes and goes. Currently, it is here. I find the ellipitcal and kickbox aggrevate it the most. Step and running not so much. Heavy squats actually feel good, bc they get a good deep stretch in. A good stretch and a foam roller as Kariev suggested are a must. A nice butt rub feels good too:eek::p Although sometimes, I have to put DH on notice, that a massage is all that's required:p Also, I ice after workout if I feel it is going to bug me, and sometimes heating pad when I go to bed. I have a microwave one, so its not on all night. I find it cramps up when I sleep, and that is very bothersome. I sleep on my stomach and often have to pull that leg up and out like a frog and sleep like that. On bad days, sitting on it is a real pain, too. I haven't found any pain killers that really help, and don't want to be taking narcotics, so I just deal with it. I've had it on and off for maybe a year, if not more. Dr said it can be tough to heal, because its almost impossible to not use your glute muscles. She also said that once its been pulled/inflamed, the odds of it coming back are quite high. And when it is bothered it swells and pushes on the sciatic nerve - long car rides on those days suck. My butt goes to sleep.

I feel your pain, and hopefully your booty is better in a flash.

Try putting a tennis ball under the "cheek" and roll it around. This really worked for me a few years ago when I pulled mine running. It took a few months to get back to normal. I also did a lot of hamstring stretches. Good Luck!:)

January 2007, I nearly fell. The neighbors didn't shovel thier walk so I had to walk around out in the street. When stepping back up on the curb I nearly tripped, caught myself just barely but felt something in my right hamstring/glute go and I knew right away it was bad. I didn't work out for months.

I hate to tell you this but I'm still having problems with it. :(
I'm not sure if this will ever go away, I mean after 2.5 years, it still ain't right.

I love this comment Nan. So true! LOL

I did not know the first exercise but the last two I did. I will give it a try. Thanks so much for all the responses.
