Piles of "Dead Soldiers" (tennis shoes)

Madonna

Cathlete
How many of you have piles of tennis shoes that look perfectly good on the top but are flat on the bottoms? How do you justify to your husband that you need a new pair of shoes when you have six pairs in the closet? I only need one pair of "yard shoes." What's a girl to do?

RE: Piles of

Ah yes, I can here it now "you need new shoes AGAIN?!?!" Yes, honey. I know they are still perfectly white, but the soles and cushion are shot to hooey, and I need new shoes. Or we can pay the doctor out the yin-yan to fix problems caused by crappy shoes. I work 40 hrs a week, so go play video games, I will be at the shoe store!!!

RE: Piles of

I never knew "Dead Soldiers" was another way of saying tennis shoes.

I thought this post was going to be about our soldiers killed in Iraq represented with a pile of tennis shoes.

RE: Piles of

In my running days they would always have collection boxes at races for experienced sneakers to donate to less fortunate people. Runners retire sneakers that usually still have a life ahead of them once cleaned up.

RE: Piles of

"experienced sneakers"

:) I like this. Kind of like calling "used cars" "pre-owned vehicles" (but nicer, IMO).

RE: Piles of

Madonna,
What a great problem! You're obviously getting lots of exercise. My wish for you is that this should be the worst problem you ever have. ;)

I say just look for sales and close-outs and stock up, if possible. But don't compromise on quality. What I do is if I feel the need to spend a lot on one thing, I make up for it by spending less on other things. So, for example, you can buy your work shoes at Payless and splurge on the tennis shoes.

RE: Piles of

I haven't read any of the other responses but why do you need to convince your husband if you want to buy another pair???

RE: Piles of

I tend to move my street running shoes over to dirt running shoes - where you don't need as much cushion. By the time they're retired they're trashed. I do donate the ones I get that feel good in the store but don't work out quite the way I had hoped. But, my others tend to be used for gardening, or washing the dogs and cars...

As for the term, Dead Soldiers, my dad always uses it for empty beer bottles. He lives in North Carolina at the beach and when we visit it tends to be a party with all of our relatives and friends coming, so the beer bottles get lined up and he always comments about all the Dead Soldiers he has to take to the trash.

RE: Piles of

I mowed the the lawn in an old pair of workout shoes the other day and turned them green. My DH was like "what did you do tho your sneakers, you ruined them". I tried to explain that the support was shot but all he could see was that the tops were still white and looked like they were in good shape!

RE: Piles of

Linda - I have to justify buying new shoes to my hubby as well - he buys one pair of tennis shoes a year! He is active, but lifts weights more than anything else, so his shoes last longer!!! He doesn't get that cardio is what causes mine to go to the graveyard before his.......

Its very frustrating!

RE: Piles of

I just buy my DH a new pair when I buy mine. He moans and complains saying that he doesn't need them and should return them, but then he runs in them and all is well...

RE: Piles of

About how often do you all replace your tennies? I just bought a pair not too long ago and already they don't feel so good. I did Imax 3 yesterday and the bottoms of my feet were burning and almost numb! Not a pleasant experience! They are maybe 2.5 months old. What do you think? Dead soldier or not? What's with the burning and numbness when jumping?

RE: Piles of

FYI: if your used shoes are too far gone to be of use to anyone, they can be recycled. Nike accepts all brands of workout shoes (I just can't bring myself to use the word "sneakers," which bring to mind for me those fabric 'tennis shoes' of the 70's, like Keds) and turns them into sports-floor surfaces. Info at : nrc-recycle.org/reusashoe.aspx )
