Pilates - Prettiest Figures?

Hi - I think that women who do pilates have the most beautiful figures. What do you all think? Any personal experience as to how pilates has shaped your figure? Thanks!!

Not me, but I agree. The "ladies who lunch" here in NYC, you know, the ones who live on Park Avenue, all look superb from their 1-on-1 pilates classes which use the reformers and all the other pilates equipment. I can't afford that yet, but my dream is to someday be able to take those classes. The mat work that calls itself pilates is good, but you're not going to get that perfect bod from mat work. I guess I just need to divorce my DH and marry a hedge fund manager and live a life of leisure. ;) :p

For myself, I haven't seen a difference in my body when I do Pilates. I have a reformer and rarely use it. Maybe I should use it more?

Ellen, I'm talking about the studios where they have like 12 different kinds of equipment and everything is done with a personal trainer. Those women look awesome, regardless of age. I have a few clients who fit that description, and they swear by it. Ordinary folk like me can't touch those prices, but I can dream. ;)

I wanted to ask the same question. What results have people had from Pilates? Is doing it once a week (mixed in with other stuff) enough to make a difference?

The exercisers I've seen on Pilates vids (won't say which one) have legs up to their armpits and boob jobs - one of which is a physical impossibility for me and the other a mental one!

i can't say pilates has changed my shape but it certainly hits those smaller muscles i usually don't hit during weight work so i noticed definant increase in flexibilty in my hips, shoulder, back and a strong back, which helps with posture. it just works things differently.

i can't comment on figures either b/c everybody is built different and respond to a particular workout differently.

I think it's funny when those pilates commercials tell you that you can 'lengthen your muscles' with pilates. This just isn't true. You can't make your muscles longer than they are. If that were so, wouldn't we be taller from pilates? And why would your leg muscles lengthen out if you're mainly working your core? Many of the pilates instructors I know are not long and lean either - unless they have a great diet. In fact, when I was getting certified in pilates, our instructor was a bit on the stocky side. She mentioned that many dancers (especially ballet dancers) are drawn to pilates to correct a lot of the damage that dancing has done to their bodies. This may be why people associate long, lean bodies with pilates. Many of those people are ex-ballerinas. I think you can lean out but this has more to do with diet than anything else.

I have never seen results from doing mat pilates consistently. I stopped doing it altogether. For a day when I seek a more subdued type workout that utilizes strength and stretching I now turn to either ashtanga or vinyasa style yoga.
