Do most of you consider a 3 mile walk in 45 minutes to be an acceptable cardio workout? Now that it is warm, my neighbor and I have been walking 4 or 5 nights per week after our kids fall asleep and let the hubbies watch over them. I had been doing the stairmaster or Cathe's step videos which left me drenched with sweat, but with walking I'm not sweating nearly as much. I do get out of breath a little though. Planning on going back to my stairmaster or Cathe step workouts in the fall and winter. Just curious if this is considered a sufficient cardio workout? I'm enjoying it so much!

Hi Lisa!

Glad you are enjoying your time with your friend. Do you own a HR Monitor? If so, I would say that it depends on what intensity your heart is working. You say you are out of breathe somewhat so I think as long as you are working within your target HR zone, you are fine. Your "walk" is not much slower then my "moderate jog" which clocks in at about 14 minutes/mile. It is nice to be outside when the weather is so nice. :-cool Keep up the good work!

RE: Hi Lisa!

I was interested in what everyone would say about this also. I have been trying to walk with my hubby in the mornings so he would get some exercise too but he only wants to go 1 to 2 miles. I think we are walking about the same pace you are. After doing Cathe videos it just doesn't seem to give as good a workout. When I walk by myself I usually add in some running wtih it. I thought this would be something to add some variety.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-01 AT 03:29PM (Est)[p]Here I go again with my race walking spiel! If you walk as fast as I do....5.5 mph, which is below a 12 minute mile, it IS a good workout! Especially if you throw in some hills. This is NOT a good pace, however, to carry on a conversation with your walking partner. I just walk, and I really mean business. I also always plug walking music tapes....they keep your pace on target. I use Sports Music tapes. Just be sure you get the right kind of shoes.

My humble opinion, for what it's worth. Friday I'm going to mix history and walking when I take my morning walk in the grounds of the Rutherford B. Hayes (he was president in the late 1800's)house in Fremont, Ohio. Really neat place plunked in this little town. It was the first presidential library.

WOW Honeybunch, That is a fast walk! And with hills too! I used to racewalk as my main cardio activity and I went on flat ground only and got to about 5.25 mph. I would plug myself in to fast rock and roll and then I would rock and roll. I bet your shin muscle is really well developed! I still have some of mine even though its been a few years since I race-walked regularly. Race walking really trimmed my middle too. I walked myself "skinny" Geez, now i'm thinking about buying some walking shoes....
(love your recipes, by the way)

Many years ago when I did nothing but walking for exercise I could do a 12 minute mile and believe me that is hoofin' it, BIG TIME. I would probably keel over right now trying that but I think that sounds like a challenge...will have to work on it.

I have said several times that race walking works your middle like nothing else, even more than running. The arm action does it.

RE: could you explain race walking

I mentioned something on another post about race walking, because a newscaster in town does it. Could you please explain it? I'm always looking for something to work my middle!!!

Thanks
