Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/G 4/27

Good evening ladies!

I managed to workout this morning and did ruthless core and flex and tonight was the first three tabatas in tabatacise followed up with the barre bonus on LL&A. Then it was so nice here finally that I have to take chester for a much needed walk. We only went about 1.5 miles.

Deb...my brother is doing great! He came home a few days ago and sounds like himself. He can not go back to work for another 6 weeks and he is dying to get on his motorcycle. Told him he needs to forget about the bike for a while! He still has not received the results of the biopsy.

Lynda...chester is a good guard dog and will bark if he hear something out of place. If I hear Chester bark in the middle of the night while I am alone. I will have a heart attack!

Josie...I have had only one deep tissue massage and it hurt so much never went back! My dh loves them.

Judy...yes that can be painful! So when you get the pain is it like a cramp and you need to stop and stretch or just wait the pain out. Glad you do not get this as much now as when you were running.

Hi to Valerie!!

Lynda-I was doing the leg presses with 4 and 5 risers, so that might have been a problem. I'll try doing them with 3 and see if that makes a difference.

Lori-The pain is more like a dull ache, and my glutes/hamstrings feel very tight on the left side. Stretching helps a little. It was much worse when I was running long distance and the thought of that is a good deterrent whenever I get the crazy idea that I want to do a marathon or even a half marathon again.

Good morning & Happy Friday!

No workout again....another slump that is the result of the horrible eating I have been doing lately.

Judy, I have a hip issue too, not sure what it is, maybe bursitis too? How do you tell if it's that? My hip hurts with leg presses, and going up stairs. The Piriformis stretches help ? I am not sure what is it is like that much on the Canadian side where you are, most likely Windsor? We have Niagara Falls Canada, which is pretty nice and of course Toronto. We used to go shopping in Toronto when the US dollar was worth a lot in Canada but now they are pretty close to par so it doesn't make sense. The Canadians all come here to shop, our prices are a lot lower, especially at the Outlet mall we have in Niagara Falls on the US side.

Josie, I wish we could get some of your warm weather sent this way. We are lucky if we get into the 50's!

Lynda, I cannot do any more than 3 risers on leg presses either. I don't even try to go to 4 any more. It's been a while since I have done any of the Cathe workouts that use the high step.

Lori, So glad your brother is doing well! I used to be like you when John went hunting for a couple of days, but now with an alarm, and 2 dogs that are pretty attune to noises, I find I am not so bad.
I too, would have a heart attack if they started barking in the middle of the night!

Nothing much here, work, then home. No agility classes this weekend, we leased the club out to the UKC people to hold their own trial.

Anyone doing anything exciting this weekend?

Back from our trip which was terrific. we didn't do much hiking but rode a lot. we did a climb up steamboat rock..it's only about an hour but birds and flowers on top are wonderful. it's a very relaxing destination when it's not too busy. then to some wildlife refuge type places. first one was not good, second one was beautiful. we stayed there for a night and did some riding. some very lovely areas of lakes and streams surrounded by desert scabland that has had way too much cow traffic. not bad on a mt bike. again some lovely birds and evidence of lots of wildlife but only saw a few dozen deer, curlews, osprey, canyon wrens, swifts. seeing osprey everywhere we go.

I did cardio supersets before we left, so got in several hours of cardio every day. My mt biking continues to improve. I may become a competent rider yet!.

Deb, we get a huge amount of shopping traffic here from Canada. some of the outlet malls a are there mainly (IMO) to collect those Canadian $$.

Lori so glad your brother is doing well. I haven't heard from my friend in a while but I'm sure I will when they are ready.

Trying to remember what movies I saw before we left. blue Jasmine was one. just OK. I love cate blanchett but nothing I'd want to see again. the Budapest one sounded like it was quirky just for the sake of being quirky. I had scratched it off the list. 12 years a slave was very good. would definitely watch that a second time.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Jazzercise Hiit (47 min.).

Deb, I was thinking of you and your bout with antibiotics and UTI while reading an article in May Vogue. The article linked the growing number of antibiotic resistant UTIs with commercially raised chicken. You might want to take a look. Doctors are apparently prescribing stronger and stronger antibiotics to fight UTIs. The writer said she has not had a UTI since she became a vegetarian--after really suffering from a succession of them.

Welcome back Valerie! Sounds like a lovely trip.

Lori, that's good news about your brother. Yesterday was beautiful, wasn't it? Sounds like the whole weekend will be up and down with a series of small showers. Good for my DH, who is fertilizing his hay fields and doesn't want a big downpour to wash everything away, but perfect little showers.

Judy, I first started doing step-ups with Sandahl Bergman and a 14-inch box in an old Firm workout. Can't believe how many years ago that was!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hi Everyone,

Deb-when I had trochanteric bursitis I could feel it more on the outside of my leg, near the hip joint. It was very achy and it hurt to put any pressure on that side. Leg presses would have been almost impossible to do. Running uphill was really painful. For me, when it got to the point of bursitis I just had to quit running and let it heal. When it is just the piriformis acting up, then you can usually keep up activities and it's not too painful.
We are across from Windsor. Will have to get over there one of these days.

Valerie-Great job on the mountain biking! You should do a mountain bike race this year.

Lynda-I never tried any of the Firm workouts. How to they compare to Cathe?

Hi to Lori & Josie!

Have a great weekend!

Judy

Good morning & Happy Weekend!

Rainy and cold here (again!). when will we get some nice weather?

Valerie, it sounds like you had a great trip! How far are you from the Canadian border? We have an office in Blaine, right on the border.

Lynda, I have been reading so much on the adverse effects of anti-biotics, that I am afraid to ever get any type of infection again.

Judy, my hip pain is right in front where the hip joint is, but very deep inside. Only hurts when I have my feet up for a while and then get up to walk, or going up stairs. Stretching does help right after a workout. It's like it's gone...then it comes back a while later. I have the first 6 original Firm workouts, they were pretty tough...especially like Lynda mentions, that 14 inch box that they sold for leg presses was a killer!

Picked up my Saab today, now the "car juggling" begins. Going to get a mani-pedi in a few minutes. Ahhhh...love Saturday!

Hi to Josie & Lori,

Take care,

Deb, Blaine is about 75 miles north of here. it's the major border ( Peace Arch) crossing between US & Canada.....therefore we never use it. we always use the smaller border stations since we are usually heading east from there anyway, and the smaller stations usually have less wait times.

Judy I'm not sure I'd enjoy a race. I'd have to be way out in front( unlikely) or bringing up the rear to be comfortable... I need distance between me and other bikes. I might like to try a group road ride like Josie but so far I'm uneasy riding anywhere close to anyone. DH and I don't even ride very close together.... . we ride single file most of the time, and I get uneasy when he's next to me. Not sure why that bothers me so much. We rode 25 miles yesterday.

Lynda, the problem is that livestock operations use the vast majority of antibiotics used in this country. I think it's something like 80% of all antibiotics. they use it in animal feed routinely to promote growth, and reduce problems with infections and illness in large groups of animals. it is insane! bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics quickly...natural selection at work... and then the drugs no longer work in people when we get infections. the drugs that were so dramatically effective when I was young... most don't work at all anymore because the bacteria have "evolved" into resistant organisms. Even when I worked in a lab back in the late 70's the problems were becoming evident and the situation is now much worse. we need to take more potent antibiotics often in combinations to get effective results.

We did a 25 mile ride yesterday. today will be upper body.

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning I did a pedal power premix followed up with about 40 mins of Booty Barre. Legs are really tired!

Valerie..I completely understand about needing space while riding. I think I would be the same way. Great job with 25 miles!

I can use 5 rises for step ups. I only know this because I just did the high step workout and I would only do steps ups with 5 no more than once a week.

Going car shopping today. My fiat is only 2 years old and I have had so many problems with it. Thursday my check engine light was on and I am told I need a cam shaft! If you know what this is (I did not) it is part of the engine and a huge job. Unheard of with a car that has the mileage that I have. It is covered under warranty as I am told this is like a $3,000 job. This is the final straw. I have 10,000 more miles then I am out of warranty not taking any chances. I hate car shopping :(

Hi to Josie, Lynda and Judy!
