Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/26

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did BBL High and Tight (40 min.) and Zumba Cardio Express (20 min.).

It's really pouring here and they are warning about high winds later. Cannot complain, though, because the summer was very dry for New England.

Cathy, most of our land is woods. We bought the place from the Federal Land Bank in 1982 for a song. When you hike back on it, you can see the stone walls from pioneer days when there were hill farms. New England is very rocky. The pigs enjoy being back in the woods, but the cows are on the few acres of pasture that we have. DH hays a lot of other fields to put together enough for them.

Deb, the knife looks great! We have some good knives, but when I chop, it's like things go flying and there are little bits and pieces all over the floor when I'm finished. Does this knife prevent a mess like this?

Joan, it sounds like you are now even more busy with babes to care for.

Hi to Josie and Valerie!

Good morning all.

Wrist is coming along well. I wore a wrist brace for a couple days, mostly to prevent leaning on it too much. Did a significant hike yesterday on a lovely day. It's around 9 miles RT but 5000 feet elevation gain. it is steep all the way but worth it. wonderful view point. can see 3 snow covered volcanos plus dozens of other peaks from the high point. I use hiking poles so kept the splint on so I wouldn't be leaning on my wrist too much. this morning it's feeling quite normal. most of the array of purple color hues are gone. few people on the trail, mostly we had it to ourselves. one stupid lady had a golden lab puppy off leash. she hadn't trained it and the dog kept running to us. I love dogs but this was so irresponsible. we were almost out, about half a mile from the parking lot & the dog showed up again behind us. last we'd seen him was a mile from the top, and this was almost an 8 hr hike. we thought we'd be (unhappily) sitting in the parking lot with the dog until the owner showed up, but fortunately she must have turned around early and was quarter mile or so behind. geez, no wonder people lose dogs in the mountains. I know you are mostly dog lovers. I don't understand how someone would let their puppy off leash until he was well trained enough to obey, & not go off with whoever goes by on the trail. He was extremely cute and friendly but no collar or tags. when she caught up to us (& her dog) she never said a thing. I felt like smacking her upside the head with a pole.

Fall colors are gorgeous, this is the best time of year to hike. almost ready for another bike ride. DH is on call this weekend so we need to stay close so will be riding. I guess i'll keep riding with the cleats but I'm tired of having to think about them all the time so i don't get 'caught" again like the other day. I'm not sure they help efficiency that much.

Tee hee, yep "Date Night" is a movie. kinda stupid really. good comedy must be the hardest thing to make.

Cathy, having to start over at this point, that is hard to even consider. we have loads of trees here but our problem is generally too much water. trees grow fast and well here.

A decent chef knife is the best for chopping. I have two, one cheapie and one more expensive and I can't imagine chopping without them. I have other knives but the chef ones a bread knife, and a paring knife are the only ones that get used a lot. Vegie cooks need to chop lots!

Joan, wallpaper going up is fun with instant gratification, but getting it off is AWFUL. hate that! and I will go to great length this time to avoid grouted tile.

Lynda, "City Island'... what kind of movie is it. I'd like something funny but things that are supposed to be funny don't seem like it lately.

well, deb, my 3 yr old g/son is always happy w/some kiind of big truck or tractor!!!
and, it is not especially nice, not compared to our place now,but it will be eventually.
we will live in the existing house after remodeling and then in a couple years build on the 20 acres, and sell the existing house w/about 8 acres. that is the plan anyway.
san antonio is the nearest big city. i live in new braunfels now, will be moving around seguin which is about 30m se of us now. sand country, good horse country.

so, today was total muscle shaping & power up. total of 74 min. but, i only did express cardio on tuesday, and did nothing yesterday. we did not ride when the kids were here, so it was a pretty easy day. i actually started the oct. rotation a day early. TMS was on for tomorrow, but i decided to start early. yesterday was my recovery day

Lynda, for some reason I thought you were a texas person like Cathy. How did I get that idea?
did some yard work and some shopping. calves were kinda sore after yesterday but nothing bad. tomorrow I'm going to try an upper body workout. was going to start STS again but I know disk 1 is a whole bunch of push ups so I'm not sure. It never swelled but I smacked down right where push up pressure is intense. I could always do a leg workout, because regardless of how much hiking and cycling, I know the first squat/lunge workout will get me sore.

HMMM, just looking at my w/out calendars and last month i had 6 rest days, this month i had 10, so why am i so tired so much of the time. if i had 10 rest days this month, i should be refreshed shoudn't i?

Finally Friday!

Good morning,

Well this week lasted 2 weeks. At least that is how it felt. So glad the weekend is almost here. We are going to a play tomorrow night, then out to dinner for Thai food with my brother and SIL. It's my brother's birthday and we are celebrating.

Garance, the rain must have passed us by here in western NY. The knife doesn't prevent spills, or chopping messes, it is so different because of the shape, it balances so nice and cuts so easily. These knives are made right here in NY, about 60 miles south of where I am. They are guaranteed for life too.

Valerie, I completely agree with you on the idiots that think a puppy will just stay with them! How dumb can you be? Then you hear they did not even have a collar with tags on him, it makes me so angry.. Glad the wrist is getting better, my toe still feels the same, though the bruising is going away.

Cathy, thanks for the tip on the birthday gift. there is this play set that I found on the internet called "Mighty World Fire Brigade" that has all the equipment of a fire house, plus large figures, the chief, etc that they can pose on the equipment, etc. If they have that at Toys R Us I will pick it up. Sometimes it's not how much you work out, but how good the rest days are, or how wll you sleep, that makes the difference.

Hi to Joan & Josie,

what's everyone up to this weekend?

Take care,

I agree with Deb, Cathy. the rest of the day and month contribute to whether you feel worn out or not. It all adds up, other stresses, worries about finding another place to live, enough sleep, weather issues etc. If I don't sleep well I feel washed out until I catch up. Take a day or two off until you feel energized again.

Santoku knives are like chef knifes. same general shape, and are great for chopping. I love mine and use it every day.

this dog was (guessing) 9 months old, and did the entire trail about 12 times running back and forth. it's rude to let your dog run up and jump on people, lick them, etc. I love dogs but some people are afraid or allergic, some have young children along, and it's not unusual for a young dog to go off a cliff or terrorize wildlife 'cause they aren't street smart yet. this is a busy hiking trail so slim chances of a bear or a skunk but habits are learned young. when this dog is an adult and weighs 40 lbs more it won't be such innocent behavior. it ticks me off that this woman, who was old enough to know better, said nothing and did nothing to restrain him or apologize to us.

Sorry soapbox time... one time we were far in the backcountry, a couple with 3 large off -leash dogs charged me. it was playful but they knocked me over backwards.. one got behind me and I fell over him. we have been snarled at, growled at, and cornered by dogs who "defend" the trail as their turf. once a dog jumped into the front seat of our car and grabbed our lunch. we were getting our boots and packs out of the trunk and didn't see the dog until he ran by with our sandwiches. when dogs get into a group they will do things an individual dog would never do. and I LOVE dogs! I would hate to hike if I were afraid of them. anyway, wish people were more considerate.

will do an upper body workout today as long as my wrist doesn't complain too much.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Ellen Barrett's Barefoot Cardio (48 min.).

My younger son is coming this weekend from Boston, so we will be going out to dinner tonight. Tomorrow a bunch of foodies is coming to Williamstown for an event sponsored by Gastronomica and the Williams College Museum of Art on local food, so DH will be setting up to sell some of his meats after the symposium. He's also serving toast points with riette that a local chef makes from his pork. It will be interesting for him since it's the first time he has tried selling his meat this way--sort of a trial before he goes to the local markets before Christmas.

Alas and alack! I will be grading papers this weekend and prepping for next week--Thelma and Louise and poems from The Colossus for Plath/Hughes.

Deb, we are getting the remains from Nicole here and I am wondering if we need to build an ark. It's supposed to stop this afternoon, and we did not get hit like N.C. but it's a whole lotta water.

Valerie, you should check out City Island at IMDB.com and decide if it piques your interest. I don't know what you think is funny so hesitate to recommend. How alarming about that puppy!

Cathy, that sounds like a great plan, although a lot of work, first to remodel, then to build.

Hi to Joan and Josie!

Hi Ladies,

No workout for me today or tomorrow. I will be picking up my grandkids. I need to drive to Fresno which is 3.5 hours each way, but I will have my DS with me so it will not be so bad. They will be visiting for a whole week. I plan on taking a few days off next week.

So far I have lost 5 pounds, but it looks like I've lost more. Today I go back to my 8-3 schedule at work and can start adding my spinning on Monday's and Wednesday's again.
I know that once I do this I will loose more weight.

I hope that the wither stays nice while the kids are here. I want to take them to the park and the beach and maybe the pool.

Well, have to get back to work. Have a great weekend!

Josie

Saturday

Well I got a call from one of the desk people at DH's office yesterday morning, that he collapsed and they had EMT's on the way...they don't know what is wrong but he looks awful, is conscious and is asking for me. I left work and rushed to the ER to meet the ambulance there. I got there way before the amb, the ER had not even been notified that he was coming in..

Long story short, he either has food poisoning...or the gastro bug that is going around. He said he was light headed, dizzy, while he was working on a patient, then just went down and started puking...

2 IV's of fluid and blood work later...we are home now and he is asleep. I swear this guy is trying to give ME a heart attack.. The stripe of grey hair on my part grew a half inch today.

Lots of HouseMax today, still trying to decide if I want to do the agility class. My toe hurts when I walk without the boot, not sure how it would be in a sneaker.

Valerie, I can't believe how irresponsible some dog owners are, or maybe I can.

Garance, have fun with your DS.

Josie, and you have fun with your GK;s!

Cathy, sounds like a tough one, I don't have any of the recent Firms, or Tracy etc.

Have a great day!

Wow, what a scare Deb. glad he's better so quickly. ( I assume they did an EKG?) Men are so like that, just keep working even when feeling bad. Go get the gray streak covered! it'll make you feel better.

Did you get any of the drenching rains we are hearing about?

Deb that sounds terrible. I know my dh had food poisoning along with 14 of his coworkers that had gone out to dinner. This was a couple of years ago but I don't know when I have seen him sicker. They had taken a new corporate boss out. He had flown in and had to be sick in a hotel room. What a good impression they made.

Wallpaper is coming off slowly. I did stain the new shelves in the kitchen and put on first coat of paint in the shelf area.

The bathroom has been primed and the first coat put on. Waiting 4 hours for next coat. I need to paint the trim while it is off but I have until later in the week.

I have been walking for an hour for the last 4-5 days. Last night I had to put ice on my knees. They feel fine today but need to use ice as a preventive.

Joan
