Deb, it's a lot of "set up" work but when it's done I relax and enjoy. it's a lot less driving once we get where we want to be. much more relaxing than moving from motel to motel and having to eat restaurant food.... never liked eating out. everything is "on board". usually need to resupply small things, like lettuce, milk, ice cream but so much nicer than motels. we both agree on menu choices, I do the prep work.
we stay in state parks, nat parks, BLM land, forest service, anyplace that allows camping. usually no big places with hook ups. to hike/ bike somewhere, we only need to go to the trailhead, and we usually plan for no big driving distances . Often early morning and evening are the best times to be outdoors for birds, animals, stars, and you miss all that in a motel.
that's the issue with motels... almost always a "commute", sometimes very far, both ways, and then looking for a place to eat. to me that takes all the spontaniety and relaxing parts out of vacation. motels are always loud, I can't sleep on their hot beds and awful pillows. we get up when we want, and eat what we like, pack a lunch and go hike or bike. IMO it's relaxing. I'll make my own coffee to have peace and quiet. but I love backpacking too, so the camper feels luxurious comparatively. off to yoga, more later.
