Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/9

Good evening ladies,

No workout out again today. Just wasn't feeling it which is very unlike me. My cousin's passing has been on my mind heavily. I think I just needed another day.

Hoping to wake up tomorrow energitic and will aim for Hiit pyramid. Will let you know how this goes.

We are getting a ton of snow tomorrow. I have heard 15 plus with high winds. Not looking forward to this storm especially since it has been sooooo cold. Do not want to lose power.

Been trying to watch the olympics but keep falling asleep so I have pretty much have seen nothing!!

Valerie...you do not need much room at all for travel fit. Very compact. I would say it is a total body workout but I really feel the burn in my upper body vs lower in this one. If you did not want the lower you could easily skip over it. It is a really great dvd for travel and I have done it a few times while away.

Well...going to bed early tonight to gear up for shovel max tomorrow evening!

what a hell of a day. I've had an infection in the fingers of my right hand. two small scrapes and the fingers have been swelling and looking worse. so I started some antibiotics on Monday but this morning it looked worse. so I went to see my doc, who was not there today and they substituted another lady who was Family Practice. actually it turned out she was a PA but I didn't realize it until I looked her up later. she looked at it and said, you need to go to the ER NOW for IV antibiotics and probably be admitted. holy crap. I felt fine, had no idea it was this bad, but she started talking about me not wanting to lose body parts. well, that got my attention right away. DH was at this moment getting a root canal started so I called him and he was not in the chair yet so he rescheduled and met me at the ER.
Waited 2 hours to be seen. the ER doc was not overly concerned, and said that the antibiotics I was on probably would work but we could try another combo of 2 drugs instead. so after being scared out of my mind it, turned out to be way less of a big deal .....except I am on 2 drugs for the next 10 days, and that could cause issues like Deb had, or maybe a yeast infection which also can follow big dose antibiotics. Needless to say, by the time I did all that, got my drugs I was burned out and skipped my workout.
2 hours in the ER will show you the dregs of society making full use of the system. wow.

Thank you Lori, I will think about getting TF... I've thought before but never acted.

Good morning,

Off t the airport in a couple of hours. We supposedly lucked out in western NY and we are not getting the snow that the eastern cities are getting so flight should be ok.

I am with Josie, Lori and Valerie on the seafood..I like crab legs, some broiled fish but no clams, oysters (ugh!), and no sushi or anything raw.

Josie, that body pump class sounds like it would fly right by.

Valerie, Travel Fit is great for small spaces.. I think the most space you need would be to do forward/back lunge. I was sore yesterday from doing it the day before, It hits muscles in a different way. Sorry to hear about your infection... and BE VERY Careful on the meds... what is it with these PA's? That is how my horrible infection started A PA needed to feel like he was doing something so prescribed different anti-biotic. If your first one would probably work, why the second one?

I know I sound like I am preaching now, but I am a firm believer that we all should be on probiotics with all the antibiotics that we are getting in food etc I have a really scary article about chicken being sent toChina to be processed and sent back here to be sold... I want to live next door to Lynda!!!

Lynda, I saw the results of the Westminster and read articles ...our friend (Keegan's breeder and a co-owner of Sky) is thrilled. She will get her back to keep I believe now. But not sure since she has stoppped breeding since she moved to California. We figured out that Keegan is a very distant cousin of Sky's. :)

Lori, listen to your body, take some rest days.

Judy, are you getting lot of snow too?

Off to get ready, will check in later when I am home..take care

Good Morning Everyone,

Monday I did a long ride, 2 hours. Tuesday I was really tired so I took a rest day. Yesterday I did a 1 hour Spinerval and this morning I am going to do Muscle Endurance and core work.

Valerie-that is awful about your hand. Is it an MRSA infection? FIL had one on his face last year that we had to take him to the ER for. I agree with Deb on the probiotics. Antibiotics can really mess things up. I hope you recover quickly.
I agree about ERs too. Between FIL and DH, I've spent several hours in ER waiting rooms over the past few years and it has been quite a learning experience.

Deb-It's very cold here but I don't think we are getting any significant amount of snow in the next few days.
I love that a Fox Terrier won! I used to watch those dog shows on Animal Planet when we had TV.

Hi to Lori, Lynda & Josie!

Judy

Hi Ladies,

I went to spin class yesterday and body pump this morning. Now I'm going some light house max :).

Lori, I'm so sorry for your loss. I never heard about ALS until one of the channel 11 reporters did a documentary about his brother who he and his family have been taking care of for the last 9 years. What a terrible illness!

Valerie, I have spent many hours in the ER and its not fun. I take probiotics every day and have never had a yeast infection. Hope that you feel better soon.

Judy, I try to take two days off per week otherwise I will get burnt out. One I start riding Saturday and Sunday I will be needed those off days. We are getting int hill training now.

Hi to Garance and Joni!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit +core 1 (49:22).

Valerie, I hope your antibiotics work quickly and you do not have any bad side effects. It sounds like the PA was being overly cautious and did not want to take responsibility for something she was not sure about.

Deb, Sky is such a cutie. I also fell in love with the Welsh Corgi and the Bloodhound. Have a safe trip home. Back into the icebox I'm afraid. It's snowing here and we expect another foot of snow. Ugh! I heard that about chicken processing too. I would think shipping back and forth would cost more than processing, but I guess not. You should look for a local farmer. They just plain taste much better.

Josie, remind me of when the race is and how many miles.

Judy, what is a MRSA infection?

Lori, take some time to mourn. It's healthy.

Lynda,

The ride is from June1st through the 7th and its 545 miles. You can look at the route on the web site aidslifecycle.org.

Josie

just checking in...better today. swelling is less, and colors are fading. on different antibiotics. don't know yet if it was anything scary. cultures not back yet. I am getting some yogurt and some colon health capsules bit I usually am not bothered by antibiotics, but better safe than sorry. I'm the one who can get yeast infections. more later. going on a street ride....

Good evening ladies,

Decided to sleep in and ok with this. What a ride home today! Driving in was ok as the snow had just started. Left to come home around 1pm. Cars and trucks stuck all over the place. I live up near a mountain and it is very hilly. People just could not make it up the hills. Was a terrible site. Felt so bad for the people stranded. I rode with a coworker and her car is like a tank so we just plowed through.

Came home and my husband and I did shovel max!!! This was my workout and boy a workout it was.

Valerie...wow that is terrible with your hand. Sounds like it is on the mend so that is good. I can't stand the wait in hospitals. i never understood why it takes as long as it does.

Josie...yes ALS is a terrible disease. I did not know much about it until my cousin was diagnosed with it. It was very aggressive in her case and she struggles with it for about a year and a half. Very sad.

I just started taking probiotics! Been reading so much about them. Figured at my age it couldn't hurt.

Have a good night ladies!!!!

Lynda-
MRSA is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which seems to be more common recently. FIL had his infection about this time last year. We went to see him on a Saturday and he had a huge sore on his face. We took him right to the ER. It cleared up within a week after starting treatment.

We did a nice street ride on our regular trail, 25.5 miles. have to increase mileage gradually and winter is not over yet although it was 55 and semi sunny for most of the time. we got to the trailhead in midst of a hail storm, but it was over quickly and then nice and 55 degrees. Josie, that is some serious mileage but I'll bet it's lovely.

Hand looks worse than it feels. definitely less swollen and settling down. I didn't realize she was a PA and not a doctor until I was at the hospital waiting, and had time to look her up. when I made the apt I'd asked for my doctor an internist, but she was not there wed. they said Family Practice could see me, and silly me, I assumed it was a doc. I think she overreacted a little, or maybe has had someone go "south" quickly with a similar looking problem. whatever. My doctor called me today to see how I was doing ...a total surprise, but I have an appt with her for f/up tomorrow. but the ER visit probably wasn't necessary. I am going to find out about other options should something like this happen again.

Not more Shovel Max! seems like you are not going to catch a break this winter. Deb, hope you enjoyed you sunshine break..doesn't sound like you missed much good at home.

MERSA + methicillin resistant staph aureus. a bug that's hard to kill and resistant to many antibiotics. (ETA judy, we posted at the same time).

ALS is a horrible disease. Awful.

Good morning,

Home at last. An uneventful flight, the best kind, and we even got in early.

Judy, I watched the show you recommended on the TV in the plane ( Jet Blue), ...Pit Bulls & Parolees...it was great.

Garance, Yes, we are planning on looking for local farmers for meat...once the weather breaks, and we can go out for a ride etc. Along with tasting better, it is safer. The article about China was the one that did it I think. I wish I could post it here...but it's not a link, just would be a copy and paste thing and its a little long...maybe I'll go look at it again and try to copy it here.

Valerie, yogurt is supposed to help, however with the amount of pasteurization they do with commercial yogurts, all the good bacteria is basically taken out. The husband of a friend of mine (another Cathlete) was bitten on the hand by a dog, it got infected, they tried a few different antibiotics and he ended up with what I had.

Lori, glad you made it home safe, the ride must have been scary, especially seeing those other cars off the road. ALS...is that the one that is also called "Lou Gherig's (sp?) disease?

Judy, MRSA is very scary...your FIL was lucky you got it treated quickly. A dog club member of ours died from it in the hospital, where she caught it...it was lung related though, not a wound etc.

Now that we have completely scared ourselves LOL....anyone doing anything exciting this weekend, besides shoveling and staying warm? :)

Happy Valentine's Day!

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, do you have any local CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)? DH sells his meat at two local CSAs where you can also get locally grown fruits and veggies. DH started raising chickens because he couldn't stand the ammonia smell from the packaged chicken at the supermarket. If you could find a local CSA, maybe you wouldn't have to drive around searching. Food Inc is a really scary film about our food if you want more worries about the food supply. Yes, ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Lucky that you had a smooth uneventful flight. So many people look like they are stranded in airports these days.

Lori, I don't have a tank, but my Honda CRV seems able to plow through anything (knock on wood!). I think we managed to get about 16 inches here. DH has a plow and bucket loader and was out early this morning (my valentine!).

Valerie, glad to hear you are on the mend and it wasn't as serious as the PA thought it might be.

Judy, thanks for the info on MRSAs. I have heard of hospital related staph infections. How did your FIL contract the infection?

We are having pizza tonight, which we have not had in ages. I will probably go see Her and we will go out to dinner on Sunday.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Good evening ladies!

Yeah....finally worked out! Did HIIT Pyramid this morning. Then an hour of shovel max to get my car out of the driveway. Just got home and did another 30 minutes so I am beat!

Lynda...you ended up with the most snow out your way. I would guess for us about 12 to 14. It was really heavy so this made it very challenging. I am surrounded by pizza everyday. The restaurant company I work for specializes in brick oven foods one being some fabulous pizza!

Deb...welcome home! Glad you had a smooth flight. With all the storms around you were very fortunate. Lol I was thinking the same thing about scaring ourselves!!

Valerie...I can only dream about it being 55 degrees! Right now that sounds lovely! Very nice that your doctor actually called you. I always get thrown off a bit when my doctor actually calls me instead of the assistant.

Have a great night all...more snow to come tomorrow!!!

went in for f/up today and and I just continue antibiotics as long as it's going well. It looks better but I will not skip any doses. I was a degree medical technologist ( lab medicine) so I know bacteria can be tricky and antibiotics are not as effective as even a few years ago.

did burn sets tris, bis and core 1 plus knee push ups. that's good for today. I feel for you dealing with tons of heavy wet snow. if we get snow, that's what it's like. a WHOLE lot of work to shovel.

it was mild again today but DH got a migraine last evening and I had my appts so it didn't feel right trying to cram a ride in the middle.

Lynda, I meant to thank you for the review of Nebraska. I loved Sideways, and The Descendants so I expect to like this one.
Deb, glad you got home Ok. I know yogurt is processed so much there's probably only a few active bacteria left, if any. but I like it so will do it anyway.
Lori I could not live around pizza. it is by far my favorite food. I'd weigh 400 lbs.

Hi Everyone,

I did a short (45 minutes) Spinerval this afternoon. DH and I had the day off work so we got up early and went to breakfast then we went to Micro Center to pick up some computer supplies.

It looks like FIL will not being moving to assisted living as soon as we had hoped. His doctors and the social worker are now saying that he "isn't ready" for assisted living and they can't force it on him. Everyone seems to think he will do just fine living alone in his house, on oxygen. I guess we will just have to see how things go.

Deb-glad you had a safe trip! Glad to hear you liked Pit Bulls and Parolees too. I have a few episodes to get caught up on. Maybe I will do that this weekend.

Lynda-We don't know for certain how FIL got MRSA but his hygiene is poor, and that along with his poor nutrition and weak immune system probably made him more susceptible.

Lori-great workouts today! I can't believe you are getting more snow tomorrow! I hope it isn't too much.

Valerie-if it were in the 50's here I would be running in shorts! That would be like a tropical heat wave compared to what we have been getting!

Josie-I think I will be taking rest days more too. I definitely have better and stronger workouts when I am not over trained.

Tomorrow we will be working at FIL's. He doesn't have his oxygen yet, that will probably get set up next week.

Have a great weekend!

Judy

Good morning and Happy Weekend!

More snow here overnight...not a lot but so tired of this winter.

Garance, I did find that website that shows local farms that have beef, or chicken, etc so I know which ones to go to...they are all a ride though, which will be ok once the weather breaks. I am anxious to taste the chicken. Another movie I have not heard of. :).

Lori, adding a regular workout to all that SnowMax you did was amazing.

Valerie, glad you are healing quickly, and yes I agree that you need to take all the doses of the meds, just keep a watch on other symptoms of stomach ailments creeping up on you..(you know what kind I am referring to)..and get seen asap if that happens. With a DR for a DH, and your background, you would...I know.

Judy, I wish you and your DH could have talked FIL into the AL place. the concern would be is he really keeping the oxygen on when no one is there? Any luck with getting a visiting nurse or someone to drop in for a couple of hours a day?

Hi to Josie!

Plans for today....agility class this morning, then my cousin and I going for our regularly scheduled nail appointment. We try to keep on the same schedule as it is fun to go together. HouseMax for the rest of the weekend...

Take care and stay warm!

Deb, I am less prone to GI distress than most. never gotten anything from antibiotics except a yeast infection. I am still careful. no idea if this was MRSA or not. they don't routinely do culture & sensitivity since the treatment is the same whether you know exactly what caused it or not. My CBC was totally normal indicating it was a localized infection. still waiting on a blood culture but with a normal cbc it's probably negative too.

I could have picked it up at yoga. staph infections are now quite common in healthy adults. I probably had a minor scrape and touched a contaminated surface. Gyms and the like are very common places for this kind of transfer because people sweat, sweat drips, and you also have skin contact with the equipment and floors. I have my own mat and blocks but occasionally we do things off the mat. the scrapes were on the top side of 2 fingers about an inch from the end of my finger. of course, it could have been innumerable other public places .

Judy that is too bad that you're not able to get help. when my in laws were failing they hired a private person. he was a family friend but that was how he made his living. I'm not sure what his position was called. My brother hired someone to help care for our mother for a while, similarly. mostly bathroom help. "Charlie" had care giving experience and assisted with bathing, bathroom trips, showers, and running errands. He was the only reason they were able to stay in their home. they paid him monthly "health aide" or something like that. might be called different things in different parts of the country. it might give you a break if someone checks on FIL several days a week, of course you need to be careful it's a reliable honest person since they are free to be in the house.

Good morning,

I had a horrible night's sleep...the SSS or "Sunday Sleepless Syndrome"...ugh...it's going to be a long day, and then we have a late class tonight...

Lori, you know about the SSS!

Valerie, I doubt it was MRSA....seems like a regular infection that is on the mend with the meds they gave you, so no chance that they need to change them again. I had taken 4 different wide spectrum antibiotics, I think that is what did it to me.

It's 2 degrees here now...not sure if it will get into double digits or not!

Work, then class tonight...take care.
