Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/9

Good morning,

Another lazy morning, no workout. It's like once I skip a day, I can't go back and have to wait until Sunday to start the week over. Lots of snow here, but nothing unusual for this time of year.

Valerie, I don't like working out in a gym either, I have a life time paid membership to one of the Bally Centers, but never go to it. Too much time wasted driving back and forth, changing there, cleaning up, etc etc. Love going downstairs, and beind done in 30 minutes if that is what I want for that day.

Garance, for legs, I can either do more squats, or use my leg curl or leg extension that are on my older bench. I really get good doms from those.

Joan, LOL about your DH and being on "vacation"...NOT!

Hi to Josie & Cathy,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

We must have close to two feet of new snow. It just kept snowing yesterday. Today is bright and sunny, but very cold and promising to get even colder.

Joan, is your husband in Florida?

This afternoon it's a mind-bender by Christopher Nolan: Memento. Then we don't meet for a week while they do their own research. This will give me some much-needed time to put together a syllabus for one of my courses.

Anybody noticing how the days are getting longer, especially in the afternoon?

Wow, that's a lot of snow. It got warm and the little we had melted. very mild and warm, humid. and wet. I would love some dry powdery snow to ski... we laughingly refer to the local stuff as Cascade Concrete! can be very nice, but much of the time it's wet and heavy.

DH is in his year end 'thing' and tallied up all kinds of things, expenses, etc. he added up our mileage.... hiked 361 miles and gained 100,000 feet in elevation. rode almost 1000 miles on our bikes, mt and road. just a fun statistic, doesn't seem like that much when you do 5 miles here and 20 miles there. that doesn't count any home workouts at all. I didn't check his numbers but it sounds reasonable.

Did disk 29 yesterday, plyo legs. I can do sit and stands with my left leg with no problem now, and the rt is getting better but not as good. I just kept trying and suddenly the left is easy. I like the paper plate moves ... don't go as low as they do. I don't jump as high or as wide either, but I do all the jumps. I keep my step height one riser less. it would not be pretty to miscalculate and hit the step and crash, and I only have a high step. #29 is not as bad as #27 was, IMO. so I'm modifying but not that much. I keep it safe. tripping over something because of exhaustion is a good way to get injured.

Gym memberships may work for some, and we gave it a good try once. too much time commuting, too busy, sweaty drips all over things. Noisy! easier and more efficient at home although it did require spending money on gear.

we have a small weight machine I seldom use. weights increase by 10 lb increments, too much. the thigh extension makes the underside of my kneecap hurt, as if it makes my knee track incorrectly. It is OK for hamstrings. it seems it was designed for a bigger taller person. I like free weights better.

Ewww... memento, I remember trying to figure that one out. some kind of back and forth time thing, where the movie goes backwards or something? I didn't get through it. with netflix, I order movies I'm not always sure about liking. I pay about $18 a month for 3 movies at a time so if I don't like something, it's not an "investment" like going to a theater has become. I wouldn't see many movies if it cost $20+ each trip. I usually like jeff bridges though I didn't much like the country western one he got the oscar for. I've heard the mumbling is tough.. so I'll turn on the subtitles. We're watching 'the Good Wife' right now. It's quite good. good characters, acting, story lines not overly complicated but not dumbed down either. got a documentary called "casino jack" coming up.

Yes Dh is in Florida. I don't know why they didn't go to the corporate hq in Rochester NY.;) Weather would have been the same wouldn't it?

Just finished Supersets. I did a little over 4 miles today. It's bad enough when I need an hour a day. With twice a week needing 2 hours or close enough I don't know how I will do it. I'm already behind on my work but I was trying to put exercise first. I may have to eliminate walking on lifting day. If not I may have to make Monday a rest day. Those are usually crazy busy. I'll wait and see.

Finally Friday!

Hi all. Still cold and snowy here, right now it is 17 degrees. No workout today, hope to start again Sunday with the Total Body STS one set pre-mix. My plans were to do this twice a week, with the other 4 days being cardio days. Well you know what they say about the best made plans...or is it "best laid plans"?

what is everyone up to this weekend? There is a big dog show about 20 miles south of here that DH and I are going to. Breeders we know will be there showing Wire Fox Terriers. We will be putting feelers out for a future puppy.

Yeah for the weekend!!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Ultimate Cardio Barre (55 min.).

Deb, that sounds exciting about a new puppy. Do you think you will get a male or a female?
This morning, after my exercise, I'm hydrating and turn on the Today show. Meredith is doing a thing about animal hoarders on Animal Planet tonight and interviewing this poor woman who started hoarding when working at an animal shelter. She just could not bear to see these animals not get adopted, so she ended up with well over 50 dogs. She's in therapy now, but still has 11, and it's pretty clear she could end up going right back into hoarding.

Memento was very moving and I figured it out pretty well this time. The key moment comes pretty late in the film, though, so I can understand if you never figured it out, Valerie. You learn that he's still searching for a man who raped and murdered his wife, even though he has already found and killed him. He suffers from short term memory loss (clobbered by the same guy who killed his wife), so he cannot remember having his revenge. The film is really about his being taken advantage of by a police snitch who wants to score drug money and a woman who wants him to kill someone who is after her. I thought Casino Jack was a recent release starring Kevin Spacey as Jack Abramoff. Did it go straight to dvd?

Hmm--should we have our meeting in Rochester NY or Miami FL? What a quandary!

I will be seeing Black Swan this weekend and going out to dinner tonight with DH.

Casino Jack is a documentary about jack abramoff. I put both movies on my netflix queue but the kevin spacey movie is in theaters yet. I heard about the documentary while reading a review of the Spacey movie so stuck it in the queue.
was it Guy Pearce in Memento? If I get too frustrated I bag it and go to bed and read. there are times I just won't sit thru being confused. DH is more able to follow difficult story lines but I don't recall if he watched the whole thing or not. I put black swan on the queue also. I love Natalie Portman.

speaking of animal hoarding, my brother has the tendency. he has 5 cats, he has gotten my mother 5 cats. most of the cats he's found. he has a big dog, and also adopted a little deaf dog from some lady who wanted to give the dog away. he feeds all kinds of other animals in the neighborhood besides. I think he'd have more if his wife didn't keep a lid on it. he also collects and brings home all kinds of "stuff" from cars to vacuum cleaners. he has his house, and our mother's house full to bursting. I'm not looking forward to my next visit there. I've been told by a cousin I'd best get a motel.

I'd vote for meeting in Rochester. I hate Florida. the humidity makes me positively sick. I would never exercise if I lived there, I'd lie on the floor in front of the air conditioner and never do anything else.

Deb, that's terrific you're feeling like you could look at a new puppy. Nothing like a new little guy ( or gal) to perk up everything.

Joan, great work on keeping up walking the distance. Is there a way to split the workout and do it half in morning, half afternoon? the activities are different, I like doing that so it's not a 2 hour slog.

Not sure what to do this weekend. I's warm and wet, no mountain activities. if we get a dry time maybe cycle? It's going to be in the mid fifties, so not cold.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting sooner, but I have been busy. The BHIP program has been fairly easy so far, but I lost 2 pound already. There is a lot of basic information for the people that have never exercised, but everyone so far is enjoying it. Today was a workout with all of the moves that we learned on M, Tu and Th., so it was hard.

Pull ups on rings hanging from a bar
Squats
Pushups
Sit-ups
Running
We did this six times and believe me, my arms were fried.

I'm having fun!

Have a great weekend!

Josie

Good morning,

we are off early to go to the show, will check back later to see what eveyone is up to..I came across this on our breeder's web site and wanted to share:

It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them.
And every new dog who comes into my life, gifts me with a piece of their heart.
If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog,
and I will become as generous and loving as they are.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning was Housemax and dismantling Christmas tree, other decorations. Very cold here and it's snowing again--just a dusting this time.

Valerie, Florida is not bad during the winter. I've visited several times and found it very comfortable. I like to go swimming when I visit my in-laws down there. I like Valerie Portman too, but I have not always been happy with Darren Aronofsky's films. I loathed Requiem for a Dream. Yes, it's Guy Pierce in Memento.

MMMM--went out for pizza last night, had two pieces when I should have stopped at one.

Josie, that sounds tough. I couldn't do an unassisted pullup on rings, so I would already be failing. And no running for my knees. Are any modifications offered for people who can't do the regimen?

Have fun, Deb!

Hi Ladies,

I went spinning this morning and went to the market. I will be going to the nail salon and may go biking tomorrow. Ot is supposed to be in the 80's this weekend. We are having very strange weather here in LA.

Garance, there are modifications for the people that have never worked out before.

Deb, I'm glad that you are thinking about getting a new puppy.

Hi Cathy, Joan and Valerie!
