Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/26

Good evening ladies!

Slept in this morning and sub'd STS meso 2 legs for p90x legs. I really like the meso 2 leg workouts.

TV set up went smoothly! It is a 48 inch smart tv by Vizio. We love it. It is in our little room that we have discovered we use more and prefer than our larger family room. It is nice and cozy since it is just me and DH. The TV is fairly large for this room kind of being on the cusp of obnoxious. But we don't care. All the components and the Bose system went just as smooth. No issues at all.

Valerie...glad you are enjoying FlexTrain. It is one of my favorites of the new series. I have done this one the most. I know what you mean about the remotes. We need to do something about all of them. It is getting ridiculous.

Lynda..Afterburn is a good one too. The whole house dvr sounds really wonderful. Our 2 year agreement is up in february. I can only imagine what the cost will be. If you remember we have 8 TV (used to be 9 but one went with my son).

Josie...your sandwich does sound yummy! I hate counting calories also. I try to stick with a well balance diet. My downfall is potato chips. I eat them everyday.

Chester started with Meloxicam. I am to give him 1/2 pill daily. They must be pretty strong considering he weighs 108lbs and they are a small pill to begin with. I am going to do some research on it.

Deb...I think you went to Florida? Hope the weather is warm and you have a good trip.

Hi to Judy!

Hi Everyone,

This week went fast! I did my Muscle Endurance workout Sunday and yesterday; Monday, Tuesday and today I did Spinerval workouts. I downloaded a new one that I did today:

Life Time Cycle 1.0 - Activate (Digital - On Demand)

It was a good workout, lots of short hard sets and under an hour.

Lori-I hope the meloxicam works for Chester. Your new TV sounds very nice!

Valerie-I always do better when I am tracking my eating too. I have a spreadsheet and record what I eat most of the time. I started doing that in 2006, when I found the spreadsheet online. Someone posted it in a fitness forum and I modified it for my use. It really does seem to help me keep things on the right track. I do have periods when I'm not watching it that close, usually in the summer when I am doing a lot of running and/or biking outside.

Hi to Deb, Lynda & Josie!

Judy

Good morning,

I thought I posted here yesterday, but didn't for some reason. It's still very windy and cold here, but at least it's into double digits now.

Valerie, I was the "queen of the VCR programming", DH could not get that for some reason, but he is the computer, TV cable etc guy. Funny , like you said, you kind of compliment each other with skills.

Garance, a whole house DVR sounds great, but with giving up all TV cable, I could not do that. I still haven't figured out how to tape on my VCR with the antenna set up. I wish I could be like you and just take a taste of something sweet and put it down...not happening here! I am a sugar junky for sure.

Josie, it sounds like someone at your old job is asleep at the wheel! I would hope that when people leave someone asks them why or does some sort of exit interview. At our company everyone gets an exit interview, unless they are terminated. LOL..." full of spleen"! That is a great new saying! :)

Lori, what is the advantages of a "smart TV"? my cousin keeps saying she wants one, but can't tell me why! LOL. Florida trip is next weekend...I leave Sunday and come back Thursday. Fort Myers can be tricky this time of year. Last year when I get there on Sunday night it was 45 degrees. Not fun. I hope the meds work for Chester too. Maybe after he starts to feel better, you can wean him off to 1/2 pill every other day etc.

Judy, Hey, join us over at myfitnesspal.com...you would really like it over there! It's free and lots of encouragement on both exercise and nutrition. I have done it for about 18 months now and love going over there and recording, etc.

Work, then agility class tonight with Kylee. I want John to record this on his iPad, she was so darn cute last week.

Take care and stay warm!

I agree about the turkey sandwich by the way! it sounds like something I'd like.

My weight is quite stable and has been but a little more than I'd like. 10 lbs. I'm realistic, my chances of maintaining at less than that goal is unlikely. it seems like if I'm not "tracking" I gain a pound or two a month. I need to go thru a diet cycle ever little while to keep in range. if I don't watch closely, I will gain a little every month.

right now I'm paying for WW. may go thru another month, then go to a free site. their forums aren't useful and I don't use many recipes, but the point calculator is nice, easier than counting calories. and I like the "free" food where you can eat most fruit and vegies without a limit. makes for a lot less typing. they assign a point value to different exercises though not sure how accurate it is. no point value for the things we here do so I estimate. That I can do on a free site.

I did fine with the VCR ... used to record all the time. never can get this DVD set up to work. we expect to record Olympics, then play it back & skip thru endless commercials/ interviews/ events we don't want to watch.
we have one plasma TV, a Panasonic flat screen. 50 in. Lori we had a bigger one initially and returned it because it was too big for the room. only a few more inches, but it made a big difference. an older big box TV in the exercise room that just keeps on working. that DVD works for me but we don't record anything there.

in jan we had a big jump in our cable bill too. 3 way bundle cable, internet, phone. we have the basic TV no premium channels. considered dropping the phone but didn't make much $ difference. they raised it to $177.00 a month and I said no. I got them to reduce it back to $145 a month that we've paid recently, but next Jan it will be the same battle. we would not get dish reception here so they're the only game in town. Can I ask how much you all pay for this kind of service? so hard to bargain when it's the only choice.

ETA Lori, hope Chester does OK. dogs get arthritis just like people.

My sister is back in the hospital because her seizures are still not controlled. they withdrew her meds and will monitor what happens. I don't envy her, she's between a rock and a very hard place.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Lori, you have 8 TVs?! I thought we were excessive with three. One for DH, one for me, and a smaller one for exercise. Mine is the 48 inch and is in a smaller sitting room attached to our master bedroom. Whole house DVR simply means if you record at one of the TVs, you can show it in both places where you have DVR. The deal includes faster internet, telephone with answering machine, and all of the premium channels--HBO, Showtime, Starz, and a ton of others I will probably never watch. Valerie, our new rate for all of this is $209 per month. If had only one DVR, it would be a lot less, but then, who would care about whole house coverage.

Lori, I hope the meds make a big difference for Chester. Where is he feeling the pain?

Deb, I have no idea what a smart TV is either. Maybe I will google it and see what comes up.

So, who will win the Superbowl? Or....does anyone care? I am looking forward to my chili (recipe by druggie Nigella Lawson) and some hot wings and the commercials.

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning was ruthless fast slow burn circuit. Tonight I am thinking heavy bag.

A smart TV is one that has Wifi and allows you to stream Netflix, Amazon, etc. directly from the TV. Our Blue Ray player has this feature also so it is kind of overkill. But the price was right so we grabbed it.

Our TV's our out of control. They all have cable boxes and 4 have dvrs. When we get our bill in February when I am expecting the price increase we may be rethinking things! (We have one in our master bath too ).

Chester goes back for a follow up on the 7th to check the levels of meds in his system and then we will go from there. His arthritis is in his left ankle. Nowhere else which is odd considering the amount is substantial.

Valerie...I am sorry to hear this about your sister. Very sad. Hope things get better for her.

Judy...great job on the workouts. I looked at the PDF from the link you set and that looked like it was a great one too!!!

Lynda, I most certainly will be watching the Super bowl! I am routing for Denver. My husband and I figure they beat the Patriots so we will route for them.

Hi to Deb and Josie!

I have a smart TV too! I can stream both Netflix and Amazon and we have wifi.

On another note, have any of you sisters-in-Cathe done Classical Stretch? I'm wondering if I might like this as a substitute for yoga.

Lori, I am rooting for the Broncos too. DH does say that P. Manning does not do well in cold weather though.

I guess I need to get on the Seahawks bandwagon... the whole area has gone totally nuts with 12th man stuff and "12's" everywhere. I've watched almost 30 seconds of football ( total) in 35 years, and the 30 seconds was the pass interception at the end of the last game.....only because we turned the TV on thinking it was over. but... Go Hawks!!

we bought our TV before any of the new add ons but I would like to get an easier way to record. wow 8 TV's? I couldn't find a place for that many. we must have had ours for 10 years now though it looks brand new. guess the looks haven't changed but the connections have.

I finally talked to my sister and her doc. she's doing OK and has had no seizure activity, now that she's in the hospital and being observed closely. figures.

Good morning,

Nice day here, in the 30's I hope. It seems like some of the snow is melting! Yay.

Valerie, I used to pay $175 ( included taxes and all those annoying charges you have no idea what they are), for phone, internet and basic cable. I gave up the cable, and bought my own internet modem ( they charged us $6 a month to use theirs) and now I pay $102. I am sure I could get them down more, it takes a lot of persistence on the phone with them etc, and sometimes I am just too tired to do it. Glad your sister is ok and under some care.

Lori, I can't imagine 8 TV's. We have 2 and do not watch either of them. I guess my iPad is my smart TV. I stream Amazon on there. Strange that the arthritis is only in his one ankle...almost seems like he hurt it somehow. Did they do x-rays?

Garance, ...we don't watch football at all, but since it is the Seahawks, and that is John's sister's team ( she lives in Seattle) he may feel obligated to turn it on a couple of times to catch the score. Not me. What is Classical Stretch? I got that dog poem book from the library, there are some really good ones in there. I may have to type a couple out and put them on our Rainbow Bridge hanging at the training hall.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Agility class then a pedicure this afternoon...I got my Downton Abbey Season 4 DVD's so I will watch one tonight...it's HouseMax for the rest of the weekend.

Stay warm!

Good Morning Everyone,

Just a quick note as we have to get to FIL's early today, and with the snow, we will probably be won't get home until tonight.

Deb-I looked up Myfitnesspal and found that I had signed up there last year but hadn't used it much. My user id is "judyking908". I'll get on there this weekend and check it out more.

Valerie-so sorry about your sister, I hope she will be ok.

Lori-We only have 2 TVs that we don't use much but we have computers all over the condo that we use for entertainment, and I have a laptop that I only use for Cathe DVDs.
We cancelled Uverse TV last year to save money and don't miss it at all. We did increase our internet speed, and that is about $60/month now.

I have 4 episodes of Downton Abbey to watch but haven't had a chance. Maybe tomorrow.

Hi to Lynda & Josie!

Judy

going back to clearer colder weather. froze last night. at least we got some mountain snow though nothing approaching a normal snow pack yet. 2-3 months yet to build up which hopefully will happen. even CA got some snow but they are a long way off of normal... something like <15%.

Our paper had an article about the snowy owl influx in the northeast. If you've never seen one, it's worth a trip. they are just gorgeous and generally sit still on higher ground so are easy to observe with unaided eyes, or small binoculars. a scope is great but not necessary. we had an influx ( irruption year) about 2 years ago, but this year they've all to Midwest and east coast.
DH and I will maybe try riding again today. thought about a road ride but it's frosty...colder than forecast... and dangerous with skinny tires. I did treadmill and core 1 yesterday, thinking I didn't want to wear out my legs before a ride.

I'd feel disconnected without TV though total hours watching is pretty small. watch the local evening news, sometimes national. when on the treadmill I watch something, cooking channel usually, but not many people on that are watchable. I don't enjoy their contests and competitions. I think we over pay for what we get. I think cable companies price things so that there isn't much difference between basic and "the whole 9 yards" to push people to the upper end.
every time I need to use the cell phone for a longer conversation, or one where I need to write things down, it renews my appreciation for the ease and clarity of a land line that can be held between ear/ shoulder.

talked to my sister and finally talked to her doc. not sure it helped any.

Judy, best of luck with the FIL today. sure would be easier if he were closer. I think I signed up for myfitnesspal before too. I think the main issue was entering food ... it was too complicated. I have gotten more adept at it from WW so will take a look again. the nice thing with WW is most fruit and vegies are "free", it makes entering recipes way less typing.

Judy & Valerie...if you are going to try my Fitness Pal....pm your e-mail addresses to me here, and I can "friend" you over there and you can see what it's like.

Valerie, if you want to continue like WW and not count vegs etc, just don't enter them. I don't enter things like mustard etc, calories are not that significant on that kind of stuff.

Hi Ladies,

Went spinning and body pump class today and now I want a cheeseburger ;). I really like doing the two classes back to back. My DH is going to be glued to the TV tomorrow, he is already thinking about what junk food he is going to eat at every quarter ;). He is nuts!!

One of my ridding partners gave me two tickets to the ballet. We are going to see Giselle performed by the Royal Ne Zealand Ballet. I can't wait! My partner works at the theatre.

Garance, yes the administrator is the same one I spoke about and that is running everyone out. She has been there a year already :(. I feel so sorry for my ex-coworkers.

Judy, good luck with your FIL.

Valerie, glad your sister is being taken care of at the hospital.

Hi to Deb and Lori!
