Pentagenarians & Bayond: W/B 11/23

Good morning,

we have been awake since 3:00 am....woke up and could not get back to sleep. We got up at 3:30. It's going to be a long day. Kylee started kind of a leaking of urine Monday night, when we were going to class. She was in my lap in the car, and when she got out, my pants had a small wet spot. I thought it could have been snow and didn't think about it again. Then Tuesday night, she was behind me while I was doing dishes and when I turned there was a small puddle on the floor. Looked like water, very clear. John and I figured one of us must have dropped some water...? A little later, it was just Kyee and me in the kitchen, I turned around and she was next to a puddle again...mmmm...this cannot be water. Long story short, we got her into the vet yesterday, she has an infection, which they gave me meds for, but the worse news is, they said she has calcium oxalate crystals in her urine, NOOOOOO...! The vet said this does not necessarily mean she has or will get stones, we will wait to see what the urine sample shows once she is done with the meds. Sorry for such a long post, but I am sick about this. I can't imagine her and that surgery Keegan had, and then the constant worry about them coming back, like with Keegan now. Unbelievable.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. Stay warm!

Deb- I'm sorry about Kylee :( It's good that you got her into the vet so quickly. Hopefully she won't get any stones.

Hi ladies!

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, that is so worrisome about Kylee. Why do these things happen on holidays? You are going to have a very tiring day with all those guests. Are you going to watch the national dog show?

We have a lot of wet snow, but it is over now and my sons arrived safely so we had a good time last night with manhattans and frozen leftover lasagna. We were originally intending to go out for Thai, bu the roads were a mess.

Wow, Lori, you are so ambitious. I am envious. We could definitely use some new paint in a couple of our rooms.

No traffic problems here, but my sons want to go to the Manchester outlets tomorrow, and that will be a madhouse, for sure.

Enjoy the holiday!

Oh Deb, why on a holiday!? My kitty's recent problem had to do with probably crystal formation. for cats, they change their diet and in his case, the problem corrected quickly. he was peeing little dribbles and moving around his litter box like he was uncomfortable. they treated him for an infection just in case, but the key was to change his food. I do NOT know if the same approach is used in dogs. and with 2 dogs it would be harder to keep them from sharing bowls. Puss gets vet prescribed dry kibble and he is peeing normally now. they did an xray to be sure he hadn't formed a stone already, but if he had, it must have been small and either passed or dissolved. the kibble costs more than grocery store cat kibble but over the course of a year won't add up to much at all. he is still working on the first bag and has at least another 2 weeks left so I'm guessing it might cost an extra $100 a year. cats can also require surgery for obstruction and I am so glad we noticed this right away before anything worsened. some people are "stone formers" either because of diet, or medication or bad luck. calcium oxalate crystals can take different forms. I know what they look like under a microscope ( handy but not real useful here) and form in acid urine. glittery like little diamonds. most urine is acid or around neutral pH of 6.5 to 7. I think dogs are similar to people. some forms stones and some don't. I came across an interesting article online that has some good info that on another day you might want to look at. maybe your vet has given you this kind of info already. most of it is pretty straightforward and might make you look at food ingredients a little closer. http://www.2ndchance.info/oxalatedog.htm#number13

Lori I kind of like painting too, but I hate the prep work. I want to try some of that new "no bleed" tape ..is it frog tape? to cover the edges. we have some really tall walls that look nice but are hell to reach. the upstairs will need painting too but not as much wall space but many rooms. one step at a time. tee hee. so funny when people assume the husband does it all. I don't ever get credit either even though I spend plenty of time and not just the shopping.

warm and wet here, 60+ degrees but cooling off and possible snow late Friday. always a mess. we aren't planning on driving anywhere except maybe local business for supplies. I would rather drink a gallon of paint than go shopping this weekend.

Good morning & Happy Day After Thanksgiving!

Any Black Friday Shoppers? We actually will be going out to a lamp store to get some lamps for the living room. But that should not be too bad. Not many people are shopping for lamps for Christmas!

Judy, thanks for the Stone Free Kylee thoughts! I sure hope she just has an infection

Lynda, great that your sons made it to your house without running into any driving issues. Are you going to the outlets with them today? we didn't get to watch the show yesterday, but John found it online and watched some parts of it.

Valerie, thanks for the link. Since the food I make now is geared for Keegan who had calcium oxalate stones removed surgically, I hope this diet is ok for Kylee. I have been feeding her the same thing. Keegan was on prescription food for a while and was not doing well, so I researched a lot and found this homemade food that he thrives on. LOL at your thoughts on Black Friday, " I would rather drink a gallon of paint than go shopping this weekend" !

Hi to Josie and Lori,

Take care,

we bravely went to the floor tile place this morning and the drive was busy busy! raining hard, all the spray and people driving like a-holes. we exchanged for a couple more samples and are pretty sure we are zeroed in on what we want. I calculated the sq feet needed of both materials. we may be getting some of this done by them. the one product voids the warranty if you don't have it installed professionally. Armstrong product called Vero stone. we will have all the prep work done so that will cut the price significantly. didn't hear from the plumber so hope on Monday.

did a workout yesterday, elliptical again , but slacked off today. tired from all the cooking and cleaning plus t's raining and flooding and then getting cold tonight so probably will be snow and ice tomorrow morning. will plan on a surprise in the am.

watched the end of the dog show to see the bloodhound win!. I was rooting for the Samoyed or the smooth hair terrier.

Hydration is a factor in stone formation and also in UTI's ... however, I don't know how you can get a dog to drink more except have water readily available.

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday was a rest day but Thanksgiving I did Cathe's Live Butts and Guts. Love this one. My butt and legs felt like jello when done. Had doms on friday so needed that rest day. Was still doing a ton of painting so I was up and down all day. Today will be cathe's live kickboxing and barre.

Deb....oh no! Hoping Kylee is feeling better and it ends up being something minor. Poor puppy! I never left the house yesterday. Could care less about shopping on Black Friday. The deals are not that good for me to get up that early and wait in line!!! Years ago I did it once with my friends just to say we did it and OMG - NEVER AGAIN!!!

Valerie...sounds like you are moving along with your project and you will be very happy once it is done. I do not tape anything. My brothers taught me to paint without doing so. So glad I paid attention. It is not easy but cuts the prep work tremendously. I missed the dog show would have watched if I remembered!

Lynda...it is cold here this morning!!! 30 right now and tomorrow 50's. Going to attemped to go see Mockingjay today.

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Good morning,

We are still in the process of getting the house back together. So much stuff to put away. We at least got all the tables and chairs back into the basement, and the dining room back together. Just a few more things and we will be set.

Valerie, Your project is coming along nicely. I keep 2 water bowls available for the dogs, one in the kitchen and one in the living room. The living room one is one of those that you freeze the inner ring, put the stainless bowl over it and it keeps the water cold for at least 8 hours. This was recommended as a way to make them drink more. Some dogs like water better when it is cold. They seemed to use it in the summer, but now they mostly ignore it.

Lori, I can never paint without taping or using some type of edging tool. Actually, I prefer not to paint at all, and pay someone to do it. I know, that sounds lazy but it is how we would get it done. I have to say, I have never done the Black Friday thing....there is nothing out there that I would want that badly. :)

Hi to Josie, Lynda, & Judy,

We have a wedding to go to today, not really into it, but have to go since it's my friend's son's wedding.

Take care,

Lori the news always runs shots of people crammed into escalators dragging sacks of stuff and acting like it's fun .. I do NOT understand that. looks like torture! all the hype and the ads make people think they " need " a bunch of meaningless crap. If it makes you spend money on stuff you'd never buy otherwise, what kind of 'savings" is that? No, not for me. we got a taste of the frenzy on the roads and in the carpet/tile place. I don't want to go back there until Monday after the plumber. He is evaluating what we need done to order the right parts.

DH has jury duty next week. no clue what that will involve. he is listed for 3 days. I've never done it. I was called once back about 1978 and I said I couldn't because my parents were visiting for the first time. they let me off and I never heard from them again. I know sometimes people get dismissed right away, and sometimes have to sit there all day waiting before being let go, so I do NOT think he will be a happy camper no matter what. It's close by so at least not a major commute.
I don't know how to paint without taping. I do OK for a while and then splat some paint in the wrong place and the clean up takes forever. so we tape newspaper over windows etc. then the roller won't do any harm.

Deb, I don't know anything else you could do for the doggies. keeping urine more dilute is supposed to reduce chances of stone formation, but then they might want to go out at midnight to pee!. No way to win sometimes.....

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

Yesterday morning I did After Burn (54:00), a good one after turkey day.

I always watch the national dog show while the guys watch football. I thought the bloodhound (Nathan) was hilarious--kissing the judge no less with that big slobbery face. He had a lot of personality.

Yes, I went to the outlets up in Manchester with my sons. It's really not all that crowded, and I enjoyed the time with them. I bought some new boots at the Clarks outlet, and a couple things at the Eileen Fisher outlet that were incredible bargains given her usual prices.

Deb, I'm with you on the painting. I would just hire someone to do it.

There is a great podcast series called Serial on ITunes and it's free. It's really riveting. Fun for me to listen to when I'm knitting. I was binge-listening to it up through episode 6, and I have several more episodes to listen to, plus it's not over. It's about a murder in 1999 in Baltimore and a teenager who was convicted, but continues to claim his innocence. A reporter is re-visiting the case, and the producer is "This American Life" Ira Glass.

I had jury duty one time for a land dispute. It went on for 2 weeks and it was a total bore. More often than not I've either been dismissed or I call the night before to find out there is nothing on the docket.

Housemax for me today. My sons are headed back to Boston, but the weather is nothing like it was on Wednesday.

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did Muscle Max, then some housemax this afternoon.

We went to Indiana on Thanksgiving. We hit some lake effect snow on the way there and back but didn't have any problems. We did see a few cars in the ditch though. It was a nice dinner, and great to be with family. It meant a lot to DH I know. We got home around midnight, so it was a long day with a lot of driving. The next time we go I think we will stay overnight.

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!

Judy
