Hello ladies. I can't believe this is my first time logging on to the Cathe forum in over a month!
Haylee was born on March 18--about 3-1/2 weeks early by cesarean section under general anesthesia.
Here's what happened...
I had complications that worsened/developed the weekend of March 11--called HELLP syndrome. I am "on the mend" now, but the HELLP syndrome that I had was horrible and the c-section was not fun and totally unexpected. I thought I had a bad case of the flu, the weekend of March 11, but I had been developing this HELLP syndrome
where the mommy's body basically becomes allergic to the baby. My liver enzymes kept rising to dangerous levels and my blood platelets kept dropping (this means my blood would not clot and I could have
hemorrhages and/or seizures and bleed to death). All those flu symptoms were HELLP symptoms--throwing up, no energy, swelling (I looked like elephant woman by the time I had surgery). On Friday (3/17), my midwife was initially going to try to have my labor induced and try to deliver the baby, but my blood levels got so screwed up by Saturday morning, that she gave me one real option--have the baby by emergency c-section or both of you will likely die. The c-section feels like my stomach has been ripped apart and sewn back together. The after-effects of the HELLP syndrome (stomach aches that feel like food poisoning, anemia, and general fatigue) are very draining on top of trying to recover from the c-section, but my blood levels are coming back to normal and I am very slowly getting some energy back. I never thought it would be so hard to walk out to the mailbox!
However, Haylee Lin is just beautiful. In fact, she is the most beautiful baby I have ever seen (even at 1:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.--yes--all in the same night)! I think I might be prejudiced though. We are working very hard with her to teach her how to breastfeed. It is difficult because she is so small and weak and tired, but we are making progress with the help of a lactation consultant.
Haylee is pretty healthy despite being born at 36 weeks. She does have a moderate case of jaundice. She had to be under the "billilights" for 24 hours in the hospital. After we came home, she was very tired and weak, and her billirubin levels increased. We
have had to take her to the hospital and pediatrician every day for three days to be checked for billirubin levels and weight gain.
She has started to gain weight (she now weighs 6 lbs. 6 ounces--much better than her low weight of 5 pounds 3 ounces).
Now, we have to make sure she keeps eating a lot and gaining weight and pooping and peeing.
I guess that's it for now!
