Pediatricians or MD's...? for you!

I cannot get my son (4 years old) to the MD until later. When he woke up, he was complaining that the back of his knee hurt. He cannot put any weight on it at all. He can bend, flex, straighten with no complaining but he can't stand on it. It's not red, swollen, bruised at all. No sign of a bug bite...nothing!

We were at the track last night. Him and his sister like to run around and play with DH while I do intervals. Later that night, he was wrestling pretty rough with his sister. Still, he never said anything about any pain until 1st thing this a.m.

Please do not tell me my 4 year old has a running injury!

What could this be???

Sorry no answers here - just wanted to wish you well with your dr. visit.
My daughter had an incident about six months ago - she came home from dance everything was fine - about three hours later she is hysterical in tears and complaining about her leg hurting and not being able to put pressure on it - for her it was her shin. Called the dr. took her over and by the time he saw her - about 1 1/2 hours later - everything was fine - dr. couldn't find anything. If I remember he said she probably cramped up and it eased out.

Hope all goes well and that it is nothing serious.

Sarah, I have no idea what it could be but I'll keep your little one in my prayers. please keep us posted.

I have heard some instances of children with pain in their limbs that are truely "growing pains." I have also heard of pain caused by overuse of a tender, young joint, but usually in older kids playing organized sports. Please do see a doctor.

Back from MD and Childrens Hospital for X-Rays. No answers, of course!!!!! Drives me so freaking nuts!! I cannot remember the last time I left the MD's office with any answers!!!

They were looking for a fracture. He has total range of motion, just cannot walk or put weight on it. We're told to watch it for a day or two and if it doesn't get better then we go see an **Ortho bone thingy ma-jiggy**. I cannot wait! I love dragging my family all over the place just so they can tell me NOTHING!!!

Sorry for my rant, just try to imagine your heart break if your 4 year olds legs collapsed every time he tried to take a step and no one can tell me what is wrong!

I cannot tell you what's wrong but I hope your little boy is ok. I have been experiencing what sounds like the same thing for months now. DH (a physical therapist) thinks I strained my calf muscle (which connects to the back of the knee) and I just need to give it time to heal. I have no other issues but it always hurts first thing in the morning.

Sarah--
I hope your son is ok....

I'm not an MD, but Shelly C on the Cheetah forum is a critical care nurse-- she's your go-to girl on this.

If he can't bear weight on his leg, I think this sounds serious. Or if it just hurts when he walks, maybe it's just a strain of some kind?

My cousin's 4 yo had an incident where he couldn't walk and had a growth on his spine. It was taken care of: benign and removed. But the symptoms were quite dramatic. He literally could not walk and that lead them to an MRI of the spine.

Please follow your instincts if you are not satisfied with the answer you got from an MD -- if it's not orthopedic and your son can't walk, maybe you need to see a pediatric neurologist?

Are you near the Cleveland Clinic?

I'm hoping you wake up tomorrow morning and your son is totally fine and this was a blip!

Sarah,

My son (almost 6) hurt his knee a couple of months ago. He was running around outside with his dad and fell on his knee. It hurt for a couple of days and the pain went away. Then is cam back. He was limping really bad so we took him to ER. The dr swore he was walking just fine, but they did an xray anyway. Nothing was found so they called it a contusion. He was fine the next day.

I hope your little guy is better soon. I would have him rest it and maybe give some motrin if he complains about pain. That is what I did for Tyler. (a suggestion from my sister, who is a runner).

Good Luck and keep us posted!

Thank you ladies!!!

Well, some improvement today. He is taking a few assisted steps. Yesterday, that caused too much pain so this is a pretty big improvement. Still, we will keep him resting it and continue with Motrin (MD's orders). I'll talk to the MD in the a.m. to see how they want to proceed. He has a yearly check up later in the week so we will be in the office no matter what!

Thanks so much for all the replies!!:* :* :* :* :* :* :*

He is starting to walk!!! Slow, easy steps but at least they are steps!! We are making him take it easy since it appears rest has started to work! We can see it it "wobbly" but he is being cautious.

He has a 4 year check-up with his Pediatrician later in the week.

Thanks Ladies!!!:* :* :* :* :* :*

(((how I feel now))):D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

So glad to hear!!! I gets frustrating when there are no answers. Re-reading your post made me think of something that happened to a friends son awhile back - he also was not able to walk. He wound up having some type of "virus" in his hips - the "virus" did have a specific name - and what made it better was rest. I know you said your sons pain is in his knee, but maybe this is where he feels it when he tries to walk.

I just wanted to mention this because sometimes we have to help the md's out with various suggestions. I am not really in contact with these people anymore or I would try to get more specific info for you.

Again good luck and glad he is getting better.

Sarah -
Sorry I haven't read this until now. I'm no doctor, but it sounds like maybe he injured a ligament somehow, so it can't properly support the joint. I don't think an Xray would show anything there, would it? Now won't you be overjoyed if he needs an MRI?

I really hope he keeps improving and that it's just a strain of some sort. Keep us posted!

Sarah, I'm so glad he's feeling better. I also want to add to the post above mine that certain hip problems can cause referred pain to the knee. His difficulty could be so many things, and it may be nothing at all. I hope the latter is the case. Please keep us posted.

Yesterday he started walking like nothing was ever wrong! This morning when he got out of bed, he expressed excitement when he was able to walk "Look mommy, I can walk!!!" I am going to make him take it easy anyway, since something isn't right and rest seemed to help! Hard part is, kids don't walk ANYWHERE...they run!!!

O.k., I have a handful of new gray hairs I must go through some color on!

Thanks Ladies!!!!:*

Glad he is ok.
Maybe he just sprained something.Kids UH.
But, I watch that discovery health all the time.
Mystery diagnosis, so i kept quiet. My mind waunders too much.
Just duct tape him to a chair (just kiddin).
I know it scares the heck out of you when the kids get hurt.
Jut hug him more.
Anne
