Peanut Butter & Jelly

I was wondering if good 'ol PB&J can be considered "clean". It's just so easy to make and take along in the car or on a picnic.

The brands I use are: Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter, Polamers All-Fruit and Ezekiel bread.

What do you think? I've been REALLY trying to clean up my diet significantly.

I tried the natural peanut butter...not good and it's too hard to spread...also mind had to be refrigerated... does your's?...I like the Peter Pan whipped peanut butter...it's hard to find...but has fewer calories. My Mom makes the best jelly and she reduces the amount of sugar from her recipe.:p

Check the peanut butter - I'm not so sure the Smuckers Natural is all that clean. "Clean" PB should have a single ingredient - peanuts. I'm certain that something as generically labeled as Peter Pan Whipped, that doesn't require refrigeration after opening, is definitely full of other ingredients that you may or may not want, depending on how "clean" you want to be. But I don't know about the Smuckers - if it requires refrige, you may be fine. Easy enough to check the label.

Awesome bread choice, that's for sure! I'm guessing the Polander All Fruit isn't bad, but just check the ingredient list for anything that you can't pronounce. :)

The natural stuff didn't go over well at my house either, but the good ole' regular peanut butter has the partially hydrogenated oil and high fructose corn syrup in it, doesn't it? I thought they were both taboo in a clean diet. I'm confused. :(

You aren't confused - you are right. :) If the ingredient list is simply peanuts (or almonds, or cashews if you are trying other nut butters as well) you can consider it "clean."

Others have said that it takes time to get used to the taste, since you are used to PB being MUCH sweeter and creamier (thanks to the bad stuff in it!), but I personally love the true natural stuff, and certainly won't be looking back. Almond butter is unbelievably good!

The Smuckers all natural has peanut butter and salt, that's all. It is fine unless sodium in your diet is an issue. I think it's not too bad though, about 120 mg sodium per 2 tbsp
HTH:)

I don't think that salt necessarily makes p.b. 'unclean,' unless, as Melody mentioned, you are watching your sodium. A bit of salt does make the flavor 'pop' a bit.

Now, Skippy "natural" p.b. is not clean. Not only does it have peanuts and salt, but also sugar and palm oil. Maybe 'natural' in the manufacturer's mind (because adding that crap makes it cheaper to produce than true 'natural' p.b.) but not in mine!

Sorry! Of course a bit of salt is fine - I forgot to add that in my post, although I knew it in my head. :)

Clean or unclean, peanut butter and jelly is a food made in heaven. Yep, I love it! I do however eat a natural brand.
