Pawn shops

Once when I was in grad school, and tremendously broke I did. I didn't want to ask my folks for money (don't know why) so I sold some jewelry. Basically, the way most work is, you go in and they give you money for your items, and then you have a certain time frame to come buy back your own things or the pawn shop gets to sell them to other people.

A friend of mine has done this - I would caution you against doing this - as you will likely get maybe 5%-10% of the value of your jewellery - if you are lucky.

You basically take your stuff in - they look at it and determine a value - and you are paid in cash.

I have to be honest - from what my friend described, her experience there was disgusting to say the least - She was going to sell a very expensive bracelet - given to her by her ex-husband - It is likely worth $10000-$15000 - and the pawn broker wanted to give her $700...She talked him up - but bc he was so shadey - she never gave him her bracelet - She is keeping it...

That is my take on pawn shops - fwiw.

I would agree that it was shady and icky. I sold some 24K gold bracelets from the Middle East and did not get a fraction of what they were worth. But, I needed the money. Pawn shops know that most people coming in need the $$ asap, so they have a take it or leave it attitude when it comes to offering people a price.

When I was very young, I took some jewelry to a pawn shop and sold it for a ridiculously cheap price. I really got ripped off and it still bothers me today.
