pain behind knee - what is it?

Cathe or any of you educated crowd,

All of a sudden I've developed a pain behind my knee when I walk. Is there a muscle back there? Have you experienced this? I worked out this morning, but didn't feel it then.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks, in advance.

Over the weekend, I felt as if I'd pulled a muscle behind my knee. I used ice, and it was completely gone by Monday morning. I did skip my Saturday workout and did lowmax, step only portion, on Sunday. On Monday, I did Rhythmic Step because I was still afraid of really high impact (I was dying to run), but that was a little too much and the muscle hurt briefly. Again, ice alleviated the pain. The pain started when I doubled up on Karen Voight's Long Lean Legs on Thursday and then on Friday, I did Hardcore Extreme. I think I just overworked my hamstrings and knees. I also did NOT listen to my body. When I felt the first twinges of pain, I just ignored it. I hope this helps. I rarely answer posts. I just lurk, but I was just so amazed to see that someone else had a similar pain. It seems like it's in a weird spot.

Hi Rhiannon! Gosh, the knee is such a complex joint. Knee pain could really be related to so many things. Since you said it hurts behind your knee when you walk, the pain could be associated with very early signs of runners knee. Then there is also another condition in which pain in the back of the knee is common. Thats called a Bakers Cyst. I'm certainly not implying that you have these conditions but perhaps you want to read about them online to see if the symptoms of these conditions equate with your own. But I always let the doctor do the official diagnosing. If the pain is not severe enough to go to the doc, try taking three or four days off to rest it and take an anti-inflammatory. Just a suggestion, wink!
