P90X Question you probably haven't heard...

My DH has been basically a couch potato since we started having kids (13+ years!). He works hard, but no formal workouts in that long of a period.

His schedule at work is changing, and he feels he'll have an hour in the morning now to start working out. He told me tonight he wanted to try P90X. I really didn't want to shoot him down, but isn't that an advanced workout? Or can a beginner modify and follow it? I told him to start out with an MTV Step workout we used to do together, and maybe one of Cathe's beginner/intermed. steps.

ANy opinions?

Thanks!

The weight workouts won't be so bad, he can definitely modify with lighter weights, and the kenpo should be ok too. The only thing I will say is that he can definitely modify Plyo, core synergistics and cardio... by taking more breaks, etc. but he might feel really overwhelmed by how much he has to modify those. It can be a little depressing. I was in decent shape when I started P90x and some of the moves were a bit of a challenge for me (I was laughing at myself!). If he's up for the challenge and has a sense of humor he can totally do it. :D

MY DH jumped into P90x after many years of not working out and he's been fine. He started with light weights and modified the plyo until he felt more comfortable leaping into the air.

He can also do a 'halfsies' rotation-- just doing 1/2 of the weight workouts--to start with, if he finds the whole workout too much. Most of the weight workouts can easily be cut in 1/2 by just doing the first 1/2. Others (like shoulders and arms) can be halved by chaptering forward through the repeated circuits.

Chris, that is cool! Maybe you guys will work out together eventually. :) But does that mean you're going to have to buy P90X? Make him do STS!!! ;) It is very cool -- I hope he gets into it.

Yup! I agree with these ladies! My husband started doing the P90X when he wasn't in the best of shape either!:p

He said ANYONE can do it all they do is modify any move or exercise they can't complete in the advanced way! (and taking longer breaks is a good suggestion too!;))

I say...HE SHOULD DO IT! teehee My Hubby's looking pretty darn sexy!

Thanks for the replies! I think he would be more into it if it's P90X, just because of the "man factor". Maybe after he gets into weights this way, I can recruit him over to Cathe.

I know, Beth, it would be totally cool! I've always been curious as to how it would be to have him workout with me, like Hottie & her DH!

and YES, we'd have to buy P90X!

My husband introduced P90X to me. The first time we did it together, neither one of us had worked out regularly for years. The first month, as Tony would say, was ugly! The trick is to modify. When we did Plyo the first time, I think we took a break after ever exercise. But by the end of the second month we could do the entire workout with no additional breaks. In the begining, I notice that my husband had a tendency to grab the heaviest weights he could, he learned real quick that was the wrong idea. He would be so sore the next day he could barley walk or lift his arms. Advice your husband to lift less than he thinks he can, at least for the first couple weeks to prevent this from happening. Working out with my husband is fun and has brought us closer if that is possible after 26 years of mariage. He pushes me and corrects my form and makes me laugh through the pain. One side benefit, besides a new body, is what happens in the bedroom is funner too;)
