P90x (AGAIN)

Cathlete
Well with all this talk on this subject I just want to say that I just purchased it I did the Free 30 Day Trial: after that 4 payments of $35.00.

I am an intermediate exerciser May I please ask anyone that wants to answer this again what are some pros and cons It seems the best of the group seems to be plyo, kenpox, and core synergic. Why? I figured if I didn't like a couple of them I can sell them on Ebay. How about the drink that comes with it what did you do with it? What equipment would I need that Cathe does not have in her workouts. I feel guilty wanting to try something besides Cathe but I am looking for something that I can do on my Free day or when I have extra free time. You know shaking things up a bit. I am sorry I am making this repetitive for you all but a little extra perspective while I am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

TIA

Well, the series is a rotation that last 90 days and it is spelled out exactly which workouts to do each day. If you follow the rotation as suggested, you need every single DVD in the series. If you plan on doing just one P90X workout on your "Free Day", I am not sure you will enjoy the rewards of the series.

I never had the recovery drink so I cannot comment. I would have to read the nutritional label to decide whether or not I would consume. I made my own out of protein powder and fruit.

The only cons to the series (we are heading into "opinion" territory) is it lacks sufficient lower body work. No big deal, I just did GS Legs. Other con (again, my opinion) is the music is horrible. Finally (opinion and I am a definate minority on this), Tony is annoying as all hell. Now...I am convinced that this series is designed to attract men, which not a lot of home fitness videos have done. That being the case, the above "cons" are suitable....the lower body work once a week works, the electic guitar strumming works and Tony's ego works.

Pros...upper body strength and definition out the wazoo! It's something totally different.

I hope you enjoy your purchase!

Beth, if you do a search in the Open Forum on "P90X," you'll find quite a few threads that contain the info you are looking for.

I've read many of the reviews on this subject but I think I have a question that MAY have not be answered. Do you think that this series would work for a man who already works out but wants variety? In other words, would this work for someone who is VERY knowledgable about exercise and a stickler about form? Would this appeal to say, the male personal trainer or for someone who is needing to learn what to do? Make sense?

Thanks!!

Carolyn

ETA: I didn't mean to change the subject for the orginal poster. Sorry if I changed direction without starting a new thread. I just felt bad starting a new P9OX thread !:)

If you're into lifting weights then I don't think you'll be disappointed with the program. When you receive it you will be completely overwhelmed by everything that you got for the money. It is a COMPLETE 90 program that encompasses the exercise side of things as well as the nutritional side of things. I would most certainly suggest doing a round as the program is intended so that you can really form an educated opinion about it.

The upper body work is amazing...but you do have to be willing to do push ups (lots of them in all different variations) and pull ups. For the pullups my first round I used the door gym contraption and modified using a chair (you'll understand what I'm saying once you preview it). My second 1/2 round I used the resistance band in the door.

Tony's style is very different from Cathe's. I love Tony...every program of his that I have I've thoroughly enjoyed. But I can understand why he would get on someone's nerves. My husband and I did this program together, he's still doing it actually. You will find however that the cardio may not be enough for you...but I think that was part of the rational for the program, not to include alot of heavy cardio since it's more of a muscle building program, not a fat loss program perse.

I would also agree that dependent upon what you consider a good leg workout P90X's may not be up to your standards. If you're hoping for alot of weighted leg work like Cathe does you're not going to get it. But if you're into body weight type exercises for your legs you will be more than satisfied...just wait till you attempt your first wall squat   .

I truly feel that this program should be in everyone's fitness library if you're an avid at home exerciser and are into weight training. Let us know what you think once you get it.

Oh and the drink you're referring to I'm assuming is the recovery drink...let me just tell you this thing is unbelievably good...it's like a liquid dreamcicle. I swear it's the reason I work out some days so that I can have that darned drink :9 :9 !! I love that thing!!

Yes Deni - thank you for such a great response. I just got my P90X last week and began it on Monday. I have been throwing some additional cardio in there, but WOW! - what workouts. I've been reluctant to order the recovery drink formula, but may have to consider it more based upon that review.

Carolyn...there is a lot of variety in this program. He uses a bunch of different variations of push ups and pull ups, but he also uses a lot of dumbbell exercises that I'd never done before, nor had my husband (we did the program together). My husband enjoyed the cardio portions because it isn't at all dancy or "choreographed" it's more like sports drills. The Plyo video is worth it's money in gold I think. Tony gives a lot of attention to form and rep ranges i.e. building mass versus toning up. The program is not intended for beginners in any way shape or form...you really need to have a substantial amount of athletic conditioning already established to do it.

While I was home for xmas this past year I met up with a male cousin of mine to workout, he's a personal trainer. It was while I was in the middle of my first round of the X and I think he thought I was going to be completely clueless as to how to work with weights. But he was surprised at how much I knew and he actually took away a couple of new exercises for himself that I incorporated into our workout that came from the P90X workouts. I learned a great deal about weight training while doing the X, my husband has as well. Speaking of which, the muscle mass and definition my husband has gained doing the program is unreal...mine not as much as I'm an ectomorph through and through when it comes to my upper body so I don't build very easily at all. But I did acquire more definition than I've ever had before doing the program...just not as much as I ultimately want.

Hope this helps...

Oh my god Lorrie...all I can say about that recovery drink is that it's like a little piece of heaven :D :D!! Both my husband and I are addicted to that stuff...I swear there's nothing better than drinking that thing after a tough workout.

Deni, WOW what a GREAT description!! Thanks that helped me out A LOT -- I too just bought it (loved the recovery drink too, but didn't order more) and I couldn't decide if I liked it or not....I did LIKE it but I didn't feel challenged the way Cathe challenges. But after reading your description I think I will go ahead and keep it for my library!!!!

Recovery drink:
Calories:220
Fat: 1g
Sodium: 150mg
Potassium: 150mg
Total Carb: 43g
Dietary Fiber:0g
Sugars: 38g (glucose, fructose)
Protein: 10g (whey protein concentrate)
Plus Vitamins, Calcium, Magnesium, L-Arginine, L-Glutamine, Beta Carotene, and some other stuff. I have not tried it yet because that is a lot of calories for me to just drink up.

I am like Lorrie; just started the program Monday. Had to use a cheat on the pull-ups. I didn't think I got a good workout until the next day...ouch!
I had pre-viewed Plyo X and thought I was going to have to add some Imax to get in a good workout. Um...wrong again. This one is a leg fryer. Burned over 400 calories, and I am 4'11" and 105 pounds, so that is a big burn for me. Arms & Shoulders today was great..and the Ab Ripper X really gets in there.
I agree also that if you really want the full benefit, you'll want to do the program as written. There are 3 different "rotations" you can do. It seems to be a very comprehensive plan for overall fitness.
