OT: Any elementary school teachers out there?

My 3rd grade DD is having trouble with grammar. She was tested and is at a 1st grade comprehensive reading level. She's also having difficulty with sentence structure and editing. She doesn't understand when to insert commas, periods, capitalize, etc.

I'm not much help in this department because I had problems with it too. I come from a family of dyslexics! We're going to have her tested for learning disabilities, but regardless of the outcome I want to work with her at home. I ordered several workbooks on reading comprehension and editing for the 2nd and 3rd grade level. I was wondering if there's a basic grammar book I can order to help me teach her the basics. Dh and I can't help her with the basics unless we know them ourselves. We were science majors in college!

Hi, I'm not a teacher but I have had some success with Hooked on Phonics. It really breaks things down to the bare bones basics and very slowly builds up from there. They come in various grade levels and can be picked up at Sams Club and Wal-mart. Good luck, I'm sure with your help she'll be caught up in no time!

Not a teacher but a homeschooler... My son (also 3rd grade) uses a program called Grammar & Punctuation, published by Evan-Moor. You focus on 1 rule per lesson, and there are 3 worksheets to practice using the rules. It's broken down by grade level. You can probably get it online, but I got it at our local educational supply store. If you have one of those, I'd recommend looking at all the different books they have and see what would fit your DD's needs. Also think about her learning style... Is she visual? Auditory? Kinesthetic? That will probably influence your choice, too. I hope you find something that works for you!

I am not teacher. My daughter have reading comprehensive problem. She is perfectly fine. It is my fault. I thought as parents, we don't need to do too much. We have professional teachers at school, who should be better teaching her than me.

But obviously, I was wrong. She was found out fell behind when she finished kindergarten. The school allowed her to see reading teacher. It seemed work. However, they stopped her when she finished 1st grade. She is not falling behind too much. But she is not in the top tier.

Lately, our friend referred a few free website for us. She really likes it. And it seems work. Even my 2 and half year old son likes it. It is free and very kids friendly. You can sit down and play together with your daughter.

Hi! I am first grade teacher, and we recently had training in a wonderful program called Project Read/Language Circle. It has phonology, written expression and comprehension components. It has been around since the 60s, and has been proven to be effective. Ask if any one at her school has training or if they can get it. I have seen it work wonders with some of my at-risk students! It explains everything about our language in a simple manner, and it involves visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile activities to keep it interesting.
