Oops I'm about 6 weeks preggers...now what?

A week and a half ago my DH and I figured out why I was so tired (and why I did so badly on the 1/2 marathon a few weeks ago) We're 6 weeks preggers! woohoo!

This is our first so I've got about 3,934,303 books on the topic. My only concern right now has been that I've been sick (that horrible cold that's going around where you cough up your innards for 3 weeks) and since I'm asthmatic I had to hold off from running and doing cardio while I was sick. Now that I'm starting to get better I'm concerned about working out at the same level I was before I got sick.

Should I tone down the weights or have all the mommies that are further along than I kept the same weights during their pregnancy? I don't go very high, 10lbs arms, 15lbs shoulders and back, 5-8lbs during some cardio, running 20 - 30 miles per week. The Dr said I can keep working out but doesn't know how much I workout or what I use.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. :)

Congrats!! How exciting!!!

I continued my current exercise regimen with all my pregnancies as long as I could, being careful not to go into ANAEROBIC range. In otherwords, you should be able to hold a conversation when working out. This means you'll have to run slower (not necessarily less milege) and may need to eventually lower your step (if doing step aerobics) or not hop as high if kickboxing.

The only other caveat is that after the 20 week mark you are not supposed to lie on your back to exercise (or for ab work).

All-in-all listen to YOUR body. It's important you you stay in tune with yourself, as every person & every pregnancy is different.

Okay, now the preaching part (I'm a pharamcist). Limit your over-the-counter drug use to Tylenol or generic equivalent. Try not to take anythign for that nasty cold unless you absolutely half too!

BTW, I ran my 1st 1/2 marathon when I was 6 weeks along. It was TOUGH, but I trained so much, I didn't want to give it up. Being so careful not to become anaerobic...I practically came in LAST place (out of 30 or so runners). Fatique definitely plays a role in the first couple months.

Again, congrats. I look forward to hearing of your progress!

Don't have any advice for ya, just wanted to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to you and your hubby! Your FIRST! How exciting. I wish you a happy and healthy 9 months!:)

Congratulations!!

As far as the working out, I would definitely listen to your body. There are so many guidelines out there, but Melanie put it well. If in doubt, ask your dr. and get a professional opinion about more specific excercises. If you have been working out all along, you should be able to workout until the end unless otherwise advised by your dr. I worked out with my first 2 pgs until the week before giving birth.

Hope that helps!

Thanks ladies!

So far so good, baby is growing and is my belly. Unfortunately I got my 4day split DVD right when the bionic fatigue and nausea set in so I've put it aside for when after the baby is born although I tend to watch it while I slooooowly pedal on my spin bike.
