Hi all of my pregnant friends! I am about to embarrass myself BIG time! Here it goes:

I have been blessed with good ol' constipation from my prenatal vitamins. I have put off taking fiber....for no apparent reason...I just have. Well, I finally gave in coz I couldn't take it anymore and bought fiber supplements a few days ago....OH MY! They are bloating me and giving me such gas--EEEWWWWWW!!!--it smells pretty awful at times! The bottle says to reduce the dosage for a few days if this happens, so I started doing this today...I really hope it helps. It doesn't appear to have done a darned thing for my constipation yet either! x( ;( x(

Anyone else ever have this problem?? Have any additional suggestions for me?

I hope I didn't offend anyone or gross anyone out with this post! That was certainly NOT my intent!:)

Have a great work out!

Wendy you're funny. :)

No it is not happening here. Although these days when I do go it is more runny then solid. (I know TMI but YOU started this graphic thread).

I don't really have any suggestions though. Maybe try eating more fiber rather than doing the supplements??? I don't know.

Oh yeah, I "stole" your idea from lilypie. I couldn't resist.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you other than maybe eating more fiber in food. The joys of pregnancy!! LOL With my first pregnancy I was gasy a lot. Luckily this time I'm not, but I'm sure it could all change in a matter of months.

my suggestion is this...when i had my first child i had constipation from my prenantal vitamins. what i did was buy prenatal vitamins without the iron. i would alternate each day one day with the iron, the next day without. wooola!! i became regular again, without having to take fiber!

That's a great idea sunny. Thanks! I didn't realize iron was not an ingredient in ALL prenates.

I'll have to go to the store and start reading some labels! I appreciated you input! ;)

Since I posted this I have began taking the regular dosage of the fiber again but I have split it up to one tablet in the a.m. and one in the p.m. instead of both together. Seems to be working better but I'm still gonna check out your idea as well.

Have a great work out!

Hi Dana,

I had the same problem with runny movements for a while in the beginning...that wasn't much fun either coz it was always coupled with a stomach ache as well...I was pretty much having the big "D" on a daily basis! I attribute mine to bad eating though. This was during the time that I was eating anything and everything in sight that was bad for me!

Well, now 31 people know I have gas...YIPPEE! lol I guess it could be worse....Couldn't it???

Have a great work out!

Hi Kristi.

You are probably right...if I tried to get more fiber naturally it would probably be better...the natural form is always better...Well, I bought wheat bread yesterday, does that count? I think that has a higher fiber content in it then it's white counterpart. I'd like to switch to wheat exclusively b/c I know it's so much healthir than white...

Have a great work out!

Sorry to hear about your problems;) This may be another one of those great things to bring up to your dr. I take chewable prenatals, and I have not had any problems with constipation (well, of course, a little here and there, but nothing that was long-term). They are called Pre-Care Chewable-just a suggestion.

Since you are getting bloated from the fiber supplements (something that will happen if your body is not used to having so much fiber), is to introduce fiber to your diet gradually. There is a great cereal for this, but right now I am drawing a blank. Oh, yes, it's called Fiber One. I'll tell you a funny story about this, then get back to my point...

In highschool, I ate cereal like it was going out of style. One morning, I was out of my sugary, no fiber cereal, so I ate two bowl of my mom's (she always had high fiber cereal), not realizing what the heck fiber could do to someone who hardly had any in her diet. Oh My Gosh:eek: I was so darn bloated, crampy, and then, the damn just broke when I got home:-( When I complained to my mom about it, she asked how much I had eaten, and she almost died when I told her two full bowls:)

Anyway, back to the point, I recommend Fiber One or any other high fiber cereal. Start by sprinkling some in a yogurt and gradually work your way to eating more. Also, a lot of fruit and water helps tremendously.

Hope this goes away, and soon!

Hi Jen.

That's a good idea too...hmmm...gotta pick one now!!

Since I bought the danged supplements I think I will continue to take them but I will keep it at one per day instead of two and I will try to gradually increase my fiber intake the rest of the way with foods. I didn't see fiber one in my foodstore today but I bought a healthy cereal that has fiber in it so hopefully it will help. I have also just switched to wheat bread instead of white. That should help too.

We shall see what happens from here!

Thanks for the great advice everyone!

Have a great work out!

Oh! I just realized that maybe it is the prenatal vitamin I am taking doing this to me instead of my new fiber!

I have IBS and have always been totally irregular with varying bouts of the big D and the big C. I have tried every single fiber supplement known to man. My gastrentologist finally recommended Benefiber which has been amazing. I am totally regular now which is so exciting to me!

I take 2T Benefiber with a glass of juice every morning and then take my prenatal vitamin with lunch. And now every afternoon at around 2pm I have to go into an empty office so I do not offend my co-workers :)

I wonder if it is the Benefiber or the vitamin?

flaxseed oil capsuls girlfriend. they are tasteless. you get them at any health store. they are cheap and they totally help with constipation. i have IBS. i swear it works!

Another thought (I'm new here, but been thru 2 pregs) might be to try a stool softener instead of fiber. There's one sold OTC that I was able to take throughout both - colace, or something like that. Check with your dr. for the exact name and to see if it's okay. It didn't cause any 'unpleasant' side effects, if you know what I mean. Hope you feel better soon!
