Ok, stupid question, OT

I am wondering what the difference is between a dental Hygenist and a dental assistant. I am thinking about going back to school and that area interests me. But I'm so clueless I don't know what the difference is between the two. Does anyone know?

A dental hygienist cleans teeth, an assistant helps the doctor. If it were me I would go for the hygienist. My ex sister in law made good $$$ doing that.

I have a cousin who is a hygenist, and I think she makes about $25.00 and hour. She's worked for the same dentist for years, so I don't know what the entry level rate would be.
