non toxic laundry products [7 generation] anyone try it??

Our household is trying to reduce toxins in our home. I love the seventh generation line. I have not tried their bleach or liquid laundry detergent. Does anyone have feedback regarding results? I NEED my whites to be white and haven't changed from clorox :) I use tide liquid as it works wonderfully. These are the two products I can't seem to budge from buying. Any feedback pro or con?

My husband and I use the Seventh Generation laundry detergent and we love it, works great. However, we have really soft water (I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not) and I do typically put a little vinegar in the wash when I'm doing whites (I put it in where you would normally put in the bleach)just as a little added insurance.

Good for you on reducing toxins in your home!

Fach,
DH and I are also switching out as many toxins as we can from our household and we love the 7th Generation line. They work wonderfully. I've also had great success with distilled vinegar in place of bleach (I use it to clean my sink, counters, floors, toilets, mirrors, etc.) I use it in pretty much the same quantity as I used to use chlorine bleach. Borax is also a natural laundry booster that does a nice job on whites. If you have any persistent stains you can use a mix of "oxy clean" (generic works fine), white vinegar, and *very* hot water as a presoak. This is FANTASTIC for getting stains out of white that seem like they might be permanent. Yellowing, socks that just won't come clean, dish towels, etc.

HTH,
Mattea:)

I make my own laundry detergent and use it on everything except for silks, wools, or wool blends.

My recipe does not suds a lot, but cleans great and leaves my laundry very soft!

One batch lasts forever and costs pennies to the ounce to make.

I just bought some 7th generation laundry detergent for HE washers, this one had a lavendar scent and I absolutely love it. I will never go back to ordinary detergent. Give it a try!

Biokleen also makes great non-toxic cleaning products. I love their liquid laundry soap with grapefruit seed extract.

All great suggestions. Thanks everyone! I must add I have tried the 7th gen lavendar fabric softener and love it. It's not too fragrant, not too soft. I'll try some of the suggestions listed here. Thanks again!

When you use vinegar for cleaning, just make sure it's white vinegar, not cider vinegar (in case there was any confusion).

In head-to-head tests, white vinegar was found to kill more germs while cleaning than bleach (it works by creating a Ph that bacteria cannot live in).

For bleaching, you can buy non-chloring 'bleach,' but since it's basically just hydrogen peroxide with a higher price tag on, you can also buy hydrogen peroxide at the drugstore for the same purpose.

So is white vinegar suitable to disinfect toilets? I have used it on windows, counters, floors, but not toilets. Also, does it whiten as well as peroxide?

I use to buy Jet Dry products for the dishes. But when I tasted from the dishes it was a funny tingling kind of feeling, and it tasted chemical. Now I make my own stuff and it is just as good if not better (clean wise) than Jet Dry. I know a whole lot safer.

I use the same thing in my laundry, and it is so great, don't need any bleaches to add. The colors are bright and the whites are white.

White vinegar will be next on my list. I need something that will clean counter tops, floors and windows.

Yes, it can be used to disinfect toilets. In fact, some 'natural' toilet cleaners are primarily white vinegar (acetic acid) with some essential oils added.

I'm not aware of white vinegar having bleaching properties.

Can you give us the recipe?

Amy, same request of you: can you share the recipe for your home-made cleaners?

Yes, please share.

Also Janie can you clafify your non toxix Jet Dry product? Is it a rinse aid you are making? I haven't found a replacement for that yet.

Also, as for a great counter product, 7th gen. makes a glass cleaner that I actually use on my granite counter tops. It's a wonderful streak free product for counters and cooktops.

I make cold press bar soap, and when I use it, it leaves no scum so you don't have to purchase any jet dry rinse or detergents. I just grate it and replace it with store bought soap/detergents. Most of the time I use less than store bought stuff.

The recipe is complex and not sure if everyone would understand it with just the recipe. I'd have to get into all kinds of explanations.

Another way to do it, is go to your local health store and purchase a very hard bar of soap without wax and only oils that make the bar of soap hard (no olive oil). And to be even safer, not to have fragrance oils or colorants in the soap. I know, you don't understand the lingo.

I'd sell you some myself, but I cant' do it on this forum.

I want to help, but I'm not sure how to do it.

I use all Seventh Generation products and love them. My boys' laundry is a challenge and I do resort to Spray'n Wash at times for those tough stains.

With the allergies of my kids, going with natural, eco-friendly products is pretty much a necessity. I make some of my own concoctions for cleaning, too, but again, Seventh Generation cleaners have been good for me.

So glad someone posted this. I've been eyeballing the 7gen products at Krogers for several weeks wondering if they would work.

I am on a septic tank so these cleaners should surely be better for my septic tank than the other stuff, right?

I wonder if the white vinegar would damage the bacteria activity in the tank?
