Hi! All
I've finally set out on my goal to become a runner. I've read the article at cool running couch to 5k and am following it - but here is my dilema - right now, I am only able to devote one day a week to running - I do this on a treadmill. My question is, what is the best way to increase my running vs walking time. I am deathly afraid of injury. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. My goal is to work up to 20 minutes of running on the treadmill before I take it outside. I am hoping that this will coincide with the warmer weather. Also, I'm trying to train for a duatholon on Mother's Day - a two mile run - ten mile ride followed by another two mile run. Is this to ambitious of me???:+

Someone once posted a breakdown of how to train your body to run. It showed mins of walking vs mins of running that you should do every time you ran. I don't know where to find it now-sorry. Maybe the person who posted it in the past will read this and post it again.

I did not follow it when I started because I never even thought to ask. I just did my own thing and I was fine. I basically started with a 1-2 mins of running then walk to rest for a bit and then run again for 1-2 mins, etc until I had exercised for the alotted time. Every time I would run I would gradually increase my running time and eventually decrease my walking (resting) time as well.

Be sure to warm up and stretch a bit first and stretch after your run as well. These things will help alleviate the chance of injury. You also don't want to push your body too far too fast by trying to run on consecutive days. I know you can only run once per week right now but when you decide to add on days please place a rest day in between. Down the line you may find that running 2 days in a row, etc is okay for you but do not try it right away.

Oh, and one of the most important things: If you haven't already done so, please seriously consider buying GOOD RUNNING SHOES!!!!

I am a newbie to running myself. I haven't even been running for a year now so I can still clearly remember how it felt the first few times I tried it. It can be really tough to break into but if you take it slow and smart and steady, you'll be able to run a mile with no breaks in no time! Good luck!

Don't be afraid of injury. You should be fine if you take it easy. You will have to eventually train more than once a week though. You'll find that you'll be running two miles in no time.

I think you should take your questions to a running forum. They may be able to help. Try www.coolrunning.com. Be careful of the advice you get -- the people there aren't "experts". But they may be able to give you ideas or answer your questions.

As I've suggested in another post, I found Bob Glover's book http://www.amazon.com/Runners-Handb..._bbs_sr_2/002-3697108-4700026?ie=UTF8&s=books
to be best resource on running. It will answer a lot of questions for you.

Also, make you sure you get your shoes at a proper running store. This is key. Don't rely on someone else's recommendation. That's probably the quickest way to an injury!!
