New Puppy :-)

I had been thinking about adopting a dog. Instead of buying a purebread I took Kathryn's great advice and went online to petfinder.com (it hooked me up to my local shelter)...I then went to that shelter and gave that beautiful puppy I fell in love with online a home. It was so simple.:) In one day she already knows her name (I changed it from Johna to Katie) and the word crate and sit. I guess all "silly" new dog owners think they have a smart one...wink. I think she is some sort of shepherd mix. Her paws are small so I don't know if she is going to get very big but maybe one of you dog experts can tell me more by her picture. She is already a wonderful part of this family....I'm just wondering why we didn't do it sooner. (My DH originally wasn't crazy about "my" idea and the ironic thing is he already called me 3 times this morning checking up on Katie...lol!!!....I already know he is majorly attached to her even if he doesn't admit it;)!)

Robin:)

PS. Check out your local SPCA...they have so many wonderful pets that need loving homes. :)

PPS. Thank you Kathryn!!!!! Petfinder.com is wonderful....without it we wouldn't have found Katie.

Awwww! Robin, she is soooooo cute! 3 1/2 months huh--methinks you're gonna have quite a big puppy on your hands........she definitely looks part shepherd, maybe some kind of collie and/or lab too?

Note of advice: go around your house this week & place all shoes, undies & socks at least 2 feet higher than the top of Katie's head......;)

Lauramax,

Yes, the SPCA did mention she may be part lab in the initial advertisement, but they didn't mention it in her papers (I thought that was a odd but I guess not unusual since she is a mix).

For a young puppy she seems to have a calm disposition....she gets very playful when she chases butterflys.

I have to add it is also somewhat sad going to the SPCA ....they had raided a Puppy Mill in Decatur, TX and had about 267 Jack Russell Terriers they split between two shelters...one in Dallas and one in McKinney. It was so sad. Although some were very beautiful (I also know they are highly intelligent animals)....I just didn't think I would be able to work consistantly with such a tempermental, high strung breed that really needs a good experienced trainer not a novice like me. Katie was a perfect fit.

OOOOh yeah.....about the shoes, I will make sure I put them away...good idea!!!!;-)

Robin

OMG, how cute!!! Katie is really adorable and I hope she works out for you all.

Marie

PS: Robin, you're gorgeous!

She looks adorable! Petfinder.com is where we found our pooch, too. She looks like she could be pretty high energy... make sure your give her a nice, long walk everyday... so good for her, and for you!:)

congratulations on your beautiful new baby. she is very cute, and i bet she is gonna be one of the smartest dogs on the block if not THE smartest. i know it is so hard to go to the spca, and i admire you for being able to go in and save a dog's life. katie is very lucky to have found you, and she is going to give you a lifetime of love....good luck keeping your shoes in tact!!

What a cute puppy!! Looks like she has some shepherd or cattle dog in her. Size is always hard to judge from a picture but you may end up with a large dog. If any part of her is a shepherd she will need a LOT of exercise.

We added a Mini Australian Shepherd (the one on the avatar) to our "pack" and he is the sweetest and most obedient dog I have ever had, but boy if I don't take him for a run (4-6 miles) EVERY day or take him to the dog park, I pay dearly with chewed up shoes.
I was out with an ear infection a few weeks ago and my husband would only go for short walks with him, if at all - 6 pairs of my shoes were gone. He took them right out of my closet. And when I found the shoes, he just tipped his head looking at me like he was saying "well, this is what you get for taking me out!"

If I were you, I'd enroll her in puppy obedience right away, especially since you are as you said a "novice". Petsmart has really great classes, and they are reasonably priced.
When we got the labrador 10 years ago, we had a private dog trainer come to our house and it was a waste of money!! The instructor at Petsmart does a much better job and I only paid $ 99 for a 8-week class, I paid almost $ 1,000 for the private trainer for less results.

I know what you mean about going to the shelter. My husband says I am not allowed to go there anymore, because I come home with a cat or dog everytime I go there :) Last time I went there to "bail" out one of my dogs (because he had escaped) I was running through the kennels, with tears running down.

I am sure you will be a wonderful dog parent!!! Katie is a really lucky dog.
Best of luck to you and your new family member. Lots of tail wagging from my four-legged friends to Katie :)

If I was in a complex that allowed pets I would go to the Dallas SPCA and check out the Jack Russell's (im in N Dallas area).

Off-topic- Robin you look amazing! Is that all from Cathe?

And Katie is a cutie pie! :)

Robin...Katie is quite a cutie. I think going to your local shelter is the best thing to do...:)

Robin,

Katie is adorable!!! Our dogs are shelter dogs too. I just adore them. I just can't imagine purchasing a dog anymore since there are SO many that need homes. Our little Gizmo is just adorable and so smart and SO DESTRUCTIVE! So we have to take many precautions with him, but he's SO worth it.

You said you wondered why you didn't do this sooner? Because Katie wasn't available then. :)

Enjoy your new puppy!

Robin,
Katie is adorable!! I would love to have a dog, but I'm not home enough. On a side note...you look fantastic...how'd you do that?

You're welcome, Robin! Glad I could play matchmaker for the two of you. And I like her new name much better than her old one (sounds like she does, too!)
