New Blog Pics Up!!

Love the Blue Nike Tops!!!!

I love, love, love the blue Nike tops in the Ab Circuits workouts. :7 It sounds like this DVD will have a nice variety and something for everyone. I love stability ball abs, so I am excited! :7

I have a pair of slanted risers and plenty of traditional risers. I also have pairs of weights up through 25 pounds, and I can take those to 30 pounds with PlateMates. I wanted a heavier single for rows but do not have room to store the big and bulky heavy weights. I decided to go with the handles that are like baby barbells. I found a pair at Sports Authority today after church with 30 pounds of chrome and rubber plates. The rubber is just around the edges, so PlateMates will still work with them. The handles alone sell for $19.99. The last set in stock was on clearance. The storage case was damaged. The weights are fine with no scratches or anything. The manager gave me the whole set for $9.99! Even with the sale at Target on Reebok plates, I would pay more than that for 30 pounds of plates. I bought a set at Sears last night and was not happy with the quality, so I returned for the nicer and more expensive set at Sports Authority. The handles have a nice rubber grip and can hold up to 80 pounds of plates. I do not think I will be rowing 80 pounds with one arm! The set retails for $60.00, so I am very happy with my find! All I need is an STS pull-up tower and the DVDs! I may need to buy a Troy Lite bar too after I figure out how much weight my FIRM barbell can handle.

Joy, joy, joy! :7 I am so happy today. :) I do not know why I am so excited. I am a cardio queen after all. ;-) LOL! :7

Oh, Catherine, I knew that I would find a thread started by you when I saw the blog pictures! ;-) Everyone looks great. I love Deazie’s smile. :) She is going to be fun to watch.

Blessings,
Heather B.

Heather, looks like you are almost set for STS ;) I agree Deazie has a great smile and I bet her personality matches!!

For sure, that would have been icing on the cake :) (which is ironically just what I would need to abstain from to develop such abs :7)

Hi Heather:
I was having trouble visualizing what these "handles that are like baby barbells" are. They kind of sound like dumbells with removable plates? Would you happen to have a brand or link to point me to?

Thanks for your interesting ideas!!

I was also surprised that only Lorraine is baring her abs on the ABS workouts. (I could do with some visualization of Robert's abs, for example!).

My Baby Barbell

Linda:

LOL! :7 I am a cardio queen, so I do not pretend to know the proper names for weight equipment. ;-) The guys at Sports Authority got a kick out of me asking for baby barbells. ;-) LOL! :7 Yes, it is a weight with removable plates. It is whatever brand Sports Authority sells. Academy sells CAP weights and plates. I will check the next time I go. I like the chrome with rubber trim. My lighter weights (up through 10 pounds) are vinyl coated in pretty colors. My 12-pound weights are neoprene coated. My heavier weights (15 pounds, 20 pounds, and 25 pounds) are chrome with rubber around the edges similar to this one. I like the rubber coated weights, but they do not work with PlateMates. This gives me the best of both worlds. I can fit 2 of the hex PlateMates on the inside of each of the 5-pound weights in this baby barbell or simply add more or heavier plates. The donut plates would work on the outside. Here is a picture:

http://pic1.picturetrail.com/VOL1120/3778596/18887636/311014224.jpg

This is currently loaded with 30-pounds of plates (which is all I need for one-arm rows now). I can add more or heavier plates as I get stronger, the plates are easy to stack and store, and the plates can be added to my barbell as well. This was a better investment for me than a single 35-pound weight and a single 40-pound weight when I got this whole set (plus an extra handle and an extra pair of collars) for less than $10.00! I can take this to 40 pounds and up with the plates and PlateMates in my collection.

You can get the handles at Target or anywhere. Sports Authority is the one place I have found that sells the plates with rubber trim that I like. Actually, Target sells Reebok plates with rubber trim too, but not at this price!

Blessings,
Heather B.

Pretty Weights and Abs

Kathryn:

I am still a girly girl. ;-) I will lift weights if they are pretty! LOL! :7 I laughed at your comment about the guys and their abs. I was ready to protest if Cathe bared her abs and made those guys keep their shirts on! ;-) LOL! :7 I am more interested in their pecs than their abs. I enjoy seeing men’s arms, shoulders, and chest more than their abs. :)

Blessings,
Heather B.

Adjustable Weights

Kathryn:

When I asked about adjustable weights, they thought I wanted the very expensive Bowflex SelectTech weights that are big and bulky. Describing it as a baby barbell got me what I had in mind. ;-) LOL! :7

RE: Adjustable Weights

Yeah, I want to see some "man abs!"}( Sigh. Oh well, arms are nice too.
I just wish I could "build" abs like Lorraine, mine are more long looking, although I do develop the serratus muscles quite nicely when i am being a good girl with my diet.;)

RE: My Baby Barbell

Hi Heather--

Thanks for posting the picture! :)
They ARE very pretty; makes you enjoy the workout more, right?!

I just realized I have 2 Danskin baby barbells, but I use the plates to put on my Danskin Barbell. They, unfortunately have rubber plates, and Platemates or Paceweights won't stick to them! (Also, I don't even own Platemates or Paceweights ...... yet!)

I also have various types of adjustable dumbells:
1) Reebock(hard to adjust quickly)but, goes from 2.5 to 12.5 pounds, not too bulky.
2) Sportblock(cheap on Craigslist, used) pretty quick adjustment, but makes noisy "clanking" when I lift them up, goes from 3 to 21 pounds. I could add Platemates or Paceweights. Just a little bulky.
3) Bowflex Tech (got them for $99, included shipping from Buy.com), Very nice, quick change, goes from 2.5 to 20 pounds. Rather bulky. You could put probably put the smaller Paceweights on these, as the weights themselves seem plastic coated, but, I tested withmy refrigerator magnets and they stick!

Trying to budget and all, I have to decide what I want to buy now!
Where will I draw the line?

-already purchased STS
-Cathe's $100 pullup bar invention
-Troy Lite Barbell $150(???) (2 sportblocks or 2 Bowtechs = 1 barbell, but, I have progressed beyond those weights for a single barbell). My Danskin Barbell goes up to 28pounds,then I hang ankle weights off to make 32pounds, but, now my barbell is bent!)
-Paceweights $100
-slanted risers $50

I think in the very near future, Heather, with you great advice on prices, I will check out Sports Authority(we have a new one close by, but, the old one would more likely have those closeouts :D ), and Target. Someone in my area (Portland) had also suggested Play It Again Sports, so, that's another place I want to look into, also. I have to be smart(cost-wise and spacewise) so your advice and others advice on this forum is going to be my guide to what I "need".

Thanks again
Linda

p.s. I have really enjoyed reading your posts and your fitness/weight loss journey. You're writing is so inspiring and always heartfelt!

STS Equipment Suggestions

Linda:

To save money, order the Troy Lite bar and spring collars from Fitness First for $26.50 for the bar and the spring collars:

http://www.fitness1st.com/Troy-Bars.html (scroll down to the bottom of the page below the Troy Lite set)

The bar only weighs 5 pounds, so shipping should be reasonable. The plates are coated and will not work with PlateMates anyway, and there is no reason to pay shipping for plates when you can buy cheaper ones at Target or Sports Authority. Shipping on weights and plates is expensive, so I would avoid it as much as possible.

I have and love PlateMates. They are cheaper than Pace weights with fewer pieces. I like to keep clutter to a minimum. You can order PlateMates through Fitness Wholesale:

http://www.fwonline.com/plate.htm

The shipping was very reasonable for me.

Can you sell the Reebok adjustable weights and the block weights to pay for some of your purchases? Keep the Bowflex weights if you like them. I see no reason to keep all three.

You need a better barbell. I would start with that. The Danskin barbell is only designed for 30 pounds or so. The Danskin “baby barbells” are not made for heavy weights either.

Thank you so much for your kind words! :) Sweet dreams! :*

Heather B.

RE: My Baby Barbell

Heather, how much does the little bar itself weigh (in your "baby barbell" picture)? I've seen the CAP brand like this and the bars were 4 lbs each, which sounded like an inconvenient number to get neatly rounded totals.

Weight of Handle and Collars

Snocone Bella:

One chrome handle weighs 4 pounds. The chrome collars weigh half a pound each for a total of 5 pounds plus plates. This is a nice heavy one that is designed to handle heavy plates. The cheaper model at Sears was hollow on the inside with rubber caps on the ends and plastic collars. I could see the collars breaking sooner rather than later. That one weighed 2½ pounds total without plates.

Blessings,
Heather B.
