Netflix streaming recs?

Inspired by the thread on Netflix, I'd like to get some recommendations for good instant-view movies. I like thrillers, sci-fi, dramas, some comedies.

I'll start by sharing some of my recent favorites:
"Cagney and Lacey" (hard to believe this is 25+ years old: it's an excellent series. It's also old enough that I pretty much forgot most of it!)

"The Lodger" (thriller)

"Survivors" (a British series about a post-pandemic world where more than 98% of the population was killed. The first few episodes are especially good.)

"30 Rock" ( I never catch this on TV)

"The Devil's Backbone" (interesting Spanish-language thriller that isn't gory)

I love Netflix streaming. I don't watch much regular TV and had never watched The Office until I had no choice while visiting my mother. I just finished all 6 seasons and can't wait until season 7 is available.

One of my favorite instant queue movies is a Swedish vampire movie called "Let the Right One In". I highly recommend it.

I've seen it! I agree it's very good. (I see there is an American remake coming out--or already out?)

I'll have to check out "The Office": I've heard of it, and I know it's won some awards, but I've never seen more than just bits of it. And on Netflix, with no commercials, it's only 20 minutes at a time.

Have you read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy? The first two books are movies that you can stream. It has sub-titles since it was filmed in Sweden (I think) but it was still good...especially if you read the books.

Dexter is another good one. The first two seasons can be streamed then you would have to get the dvd's.

I have the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo in my instant queue. What is the second one? I haven't read the books.

I LOVE Dexter! I've watched all the episodes so far (some on Netflix, some online through sidereel.com/megavideo.com right after they are on Showtime).

I agree, Dexter is excellent.

other intelligent TV shows I have enjoyed are Saving Grace with Holly Hunter, Breaking Bad (currently in season 3, chemsitry teacher gets death sentence of terminal lung cancer, needs to amass cash to set up wife and kid after his death, turns to cooking purest form of crystal meth ever seen in the Alberquerque area, his brother in law is DEA agent, ah you can imagine the tension s the poor sap goes from bad to worse, but it's extremely well written, acted and also, hilarious!). Try In Treatment with Gabriel Byrne, and Parenthood, currently in season 2 and very well observed family life. I love it. I also love The Closer and Lie to Me.

Dragon Tatoo books 2 and 3 are Girl who Played with Fire and Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Enjoy before Hollywood gets there......

How true! Some of those Hollywood remakes are so lame or bad! (And if the original has a typical European not-so-happy ending, the Hollywood version makes it all happy at the end).

I was gonna say Dexter, but was beaten to the punch. The danger with Dexter is that I think they only have the first season or two in Instant Queue and you get hooked. I subscribe to Showtime only during Dexter season now so I can watch when it comes out. Silly, really, since I could buy the whole season for about what I pay for a month of Showtime, but I just can't wait.

For something like $60 a year, you can join megavideo.com, then link to new episodes of Dexter (and other shows, like True Blood, Weeds, etc.) from www.sidereel.com the day after they show on TV. That's what I've been doing. I don't want to wait for the DVD's to come out either, but I can wait a day for the episodes to show up on Megavideo. (I've never figured out how to find shows directly from Megavideo, as every search I've tried doesn't come up with the show I want, though I can get to it via Sidereel).

There are definitely online places to watch shows that I wouldn't trust, but I haven't had any problem with Megavideo (through Sidereel) other than some links going to uploaded videos that have been removed for copyright infringement (though others are still up).

Wow...I didn't know you could do this! I got HBO just so I could watch True Blood since it isn't available through Netflix. Thanks for the info

Have you seen The Tudors? It is another Showtime series that you can stream at least through season 3.

I just spent the last couple of months watching the Aussie TV series McLeod's Daughters, I was so addicted to it I was glad when I watched the last episode.... It has about 7 seasons, I think. I found it very cute, funny, gripping, informative, and did I mention addictive?

Clare, I watched it on instant view on Netflix. Just type the title in the browse box on netflix and it should show up. I hope it's still available as instant!

I should add, that McLeod's Daughters also has some very sad parts in it that came very unexpected for me, that actually made me cry and had me in shock for a while (yeah, I did really get into it!)
