Hi Cathe!
I'm having trouble figuring out this move. When I do it, I DO feel it a tiny bit in my triceps. But I mostly feel it in the front of my shoulders, which then fatigue too quickly and don't allow me to get much tricep burn going. Am I doing it wrong? Or could my anterior delts just be too weak for this move?
I also posted this question at VF and got a few suggestions, but wanted your opinion as well. (And anyone else's who cares to chime in!)
Some of the pointers I've gotten so far are:
1. Lower and lift the weight over your ribcage instead of over your chest *and* keep your elbows as close to your torso as possible as you execute the entire motion.
2. Make sure your wrists are straight. If your wrists are bent that changes how the weight gets pushed.
3. Make sure your elbows stay parallel with the floor. If they go below the level of the step, your anterior delts are engaged, so they could be strained. Keeping your elbows parallel to the floor keeps the work in the triceps!
Pointer #3 has me a bit confused, though. I thought I saw that you drop your elbows down pretty low. If I only go down to parallel, how high should I go? It doesn't look like you're supposed to lift very high at all. Maybe that's what I'm missing. (Or another thing, I guess.) Very small range of motion, with constant tricep contraction? Am I getting warmer?
Now, I do have a bad right shoulder/trapezius from an injury loooong ago. Someone at VF noted that they have trouble with their previously injured rotator during this move, so they just do other tricep moves instead. My normal check is whether I'm feeling the trouble on both sides, or just that right side. Since it's a fairly new move to me, I'll have to pay more attention next time. If I can't figure it out, I'll probably opt for french presses or kickbacks instead.
TIA for any help!
Oh, and just one additional note. I only recently got the PS series, Power Hour and MIS. My hubby LOVES them!!!! http://www.smilies-world.de/Smilies/Smilies_klein/ZoumZoumZeng1341ok.gif I don't think he's done any other weight-training except these since they arrived.
