Need "EC" help - swelling

Since you are such an educated crowd - hoping someone has some thoughts. You know I'm training for the Komen 60-mile. We've been doing progressively longer walks (this morning did 10 miles) and I'm noticing a lot of swelling the more we do. I stay very well hydrated, but my fingers swell a lot and I can even feel it in my wrists as I turn them around. Also, my knee has begun swelling a bit - not painful, but it swells and tightens. Looking for input on the swelling or ways to reduce it - is it a sodium / electrolyte thing? I carry water in my camel pack as opposed to a sports drink. All of us who were walking today noticed the swelling. Anyone here have any thoughts I can share with my training group? Thanks.

I'll be walking the Komen 3-day (60 miles) the week after Cathe's RT. To view my webpage go to: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=202302&supid=166016627

RE: Need

I recall reading somewhere that if your walk is 2 hours or longer, you should replenish your electrolytes with a sports drink. I would also avoid caffeine before your walk.

As for the swelling in your hands, try periodically making a fist and then squeezing and relaxing several times. I've always had problems with my hands swelling when I walk and this technique has worked for me. You should also stop periodically to stretch your calves and hamstrings. HTH:)

RE: Need

Just bumping my own thread (sorry) to see if there are any other thoughts. Thanks Michele - I did some research and I know I'm getting way too much water without replenishing my sodium and potassium - I need to find a good balance. Someone mentioned Propel water - anyone else here tried that? I've not but sounds like I should look into it. Happy Monday Cathe-ites.
