Need advice

Maximus

Cathlete
OK, I've been doing Cathe's videos for maybe 7 years now. I've tried a few others--Karen Voight, Kathy Smith, etc.--and none even come close to Cathe's intensity. I'd like to put a little variety into my cardio workouts, doing the same ones over & over can get a little boring (no offense Cathe).

So, can any of you guys offer advice on other home videos that are as intense as Cathe's? Something to make me sweat buckets? That will make me wish I'd never gotten up that morning? That will have me gasping for breath after the first 10 minutes?

Any input would be appreciated.....

I would suggest Mindy Mylrea. Her Interval workouts are tough. That is the only one that I can think of off the top of my head right now. I'm sure there are more, you should also check out CIA. I think their webiste is www.creativeinstructorsaerobics.com Their workouts can be really long, and I think that they are all advanced. Mindy has one that is really tough through them. She's not as "dancey" as Cathe, but she can make it tough. I would also check out www.videofitness.com and see what other reviewers say about some workouts. You might find others that I dont' know about or am forgetting about.
If you like complex choreography Christi Taylor is great too.
You can also checkout www.collage.com they have a good selection of workout videos with reviews.

Yes! I second the votes for Mindy Mylera and Christie Taylor. Mindy is hard and a hoot! Christie is hard and fun to do. Maybe you could throw in some of the older Tae-Bo workouts. The new ones Bill Blank's has out are a little boring. His Get Ripped series is good(the Advanced ones). Have fun! Variety is a good thing!

Thanks for the input--tried CIA & wasn't crazy about them, still couldn't work up a good sweat. I'll try Mindy & Christie though--any specific tapes? Problem is once you buy a tape you own it, they won't let you return it b/c they think you might be copying it. I hate to spend money on something I'm not satisfied with.

Christi Taylor - GREAT and fun to learn! I swear she is a workout for the body and the mind!

Gin Miller - Great step instructor (try "Intense Moves")

I would ditto the suggestion for trying those websites!

I really like Gin Miller's Intense Moves.

I know nothing (for me) comes as close to a Cathe cardio like running
and jump roping.

Try:

www.goaero.com for some great jump roping workouts by Michael Olajide. Aerojump 2 and 3 are super intense.

I also really like Kristen Kaegan's Step This Way 1 and 2.

I am not very familiar with the workouts of other instructors, except for stuff that is too easy and I got rid of (Charlene Prickett, The Firm, Gin Miller mostly, Karen Voight, G-Force, etc.)

What I do for variety from Cathe cardio is I run a hilly loop in Duke Forest or the NC Botanical Garden (5 miles is about 45 minutes or so). Or I ride my stationary bicycle while watching either Boot Camp's all but core premix or Gin Miller's Intense Moves. (I did the latter today). This way I do an interval when Cathe or Gin does, then a bit of recovery, then an aerobic section. With Boot Camp, I do an intensity interval during the cardio, then come down and recover during the legs, then up to aerobic during the upper body work, then back up for the next cardio.

Sometimes, but not too often, I swim a mile in the pool, and then do some killer laps with a kickboard or pull buoys. Occasionally of course, I go out on a real bike for 15-20 miles, or go cross-country skiing or something, but those are really recreational, not as "scientific", they are just things that happen on vacation usually.

A kickboxing workout in the gym sometimes counts. I wish more than anything that I could go to Aquajock's classes! That would be so wonderful, and so low impact. But she is just soooooo far away.

Problem is once you buy a tape you own it, they won't let you return it b/c they think you might be copying it. I hate to spend money on something I'm not satisfied with.

Actually, I think Dynamix ( www.dynamixmusic.com ) has a couple of Mindy workouts, and they allow you to return videos and DVD's that are opened. I once got a kickboxing video from them, hated it, and returned it with no problem. As with most returns, you pay postage.

Aside from Dynamix, the only other places I've heard that do that are QVC (no advanced workout videos or DVD's, though), Beach Body (30 day money-back guarantee), and some videos/DVD's (some kickboxing, Urban Rebounding?) that have a disclamier at the beginning stating that the user accepts all responsibility for injury using the product, and if you don't agree to these terms, you can send the video/DVD back for a refund.

I really like Mindy and Christi too!! I would suggest either Mindy's Awesome Intervals or Extreme Intervals/Pump Party. I really like Christi's Solid Gold series (great music too). I usually alternate between those two instructors and Cathe for cardio, but I still love Cathe for strength only.

Aila:)
