Nannies

Does/has anyone ever hired a nanny?
I'm wondering about compensation and how often (weekly, bi-weekly, etc....) you paid them.

We're looking into options already for what we'll need when I go back to work after DS is born. I'd love to avoid daycare if I can.

my DH's mom is going to watch our little one either in our home or hers. we are paying her 5 dollars an hour. we checked some daycare prices and this was the average price.

I'm not sure about nannies, but there is a great chapter in Dr. Sear's "Baby Book" that educates readers about how to go about setting up the best care. He gives some wonderful interview questions that you'll want to ask anyone who watches your child.

i really like my dd's day care, but if i have nother one, i might consider a nanny dur to job pressures. this is what i found out:

what you pay and offer nannies completely depends on where you live. i know of one nanny who got paid a lot (imo) - about $2500/month with a gym membership, cell phone and health insurance. that was to care for 3 boys on Long Island. She said she was one of the lowest paid nannies in the area. it also depends if she/he lives with you or off site. it also depends on how much you want them to drive or not, how much housework they do - all that figures into the cost!i would really do some resaerch into your specific location and how difficult it may be to look for someone. there are also a number of nanny websites. you could hire someone to search for one for you...or you could do it yourself. the full range is out there!

Thanks Stardust!
$2500/month is normal for where we live too, so that is what DH and I have budgeted for once I go back to work. It's a wash for us, with the cost being the same between daycare and nanny. So we'd prefer nanny, as it's much easier for both of us.

I think this is pretty close to a normal cost if you live in a major city, and your post just validated that for me. So I guess we'll write that number in "stone" and try to find someone that's a good fit for what we need.

just some more info: she was 22-24 when she nannied and had a bachelor's degree in elementary education. so, she said that's why her salary was a little on the low side, but her degree and love of kids compensated for that a tiny bit. this was also her salary 2 yrs ago.

i hope you find someone - my mother has scared me out of having one for the next, but I am determined as I think it's the only way we can balance our work/life and the kids.

good luck!

Wow! that seems like a lot of money. 2,500$ I know it definatly depends on where you live. If I had to pay that it would be better if one of us just stayed home with him than to pay someone else.

Hi,

I live near a major city so the going rate is $15 - $17 here...some get more some less. I just joined "sittercity.com" -- check it out, they seem to have a rating guide there and it may include your zipcode. Plus, for me it's a great way to search for a nanny or occasional sitter by your area.

Good luck!

Steph,
That was the site I was looking at, actually!
I know friends have found their nannies out there.

I'm struggling to find an actual nanny, rather than someone that can "babysit" a few days/week. I basically need someone there 7-5 everyday. It looks like it'll take time, but this site will be huge.

What do you get with your subscription? We're not quite ready to look yet (I'm not due until June), but I've been poking around.

Hi,

I'm not totally familiar with it yet, just joined yesterday. But you have unlimited searches and you can post your own ad about what you're looking for too. I think your timing is great actually, my friends found nannies in a month or so.

If you sign up now it's good for a whole year and you can read bios and comments about nannies and set up interviews etc and be more selective -- that's a good thing. I wish I had known about it earlier. You can use a different people for a few hours to get a post-partum break and maybe one person will click and just feel right with you and your bambino.

I hope you find a good one!

Steph
