I saw an ad on tv yesterday [and also saw something about it on Oprah a long time ago] about a program where you select an impoverished country and village then gift a family an item such as a goat or seed for farming, etc. The concept is to help the area become self sufficient. For instance the family who was gifted the goat is taught how to care for the animal properly. The goat then gives milk to the family. Eventually they can breed the goat and they in turn GIVE [not sell] the babies to another villager, and so on. Over time the gift becomes many gifts. Does anyone know the name of this program? I saw it on the food network yesterday.

Not sure if it's the one you saw, but it sounds a lot like Heifer International.

We 'found' this a few years ago and LOVE it for those hard to buy gifts for certain relatives. We got my Mom some geese, Great Grandmother a bunch of sheep, water buffalo for the inlaws, etc. Now they have other programs where you can get into other programs that are really neat, too.

It's kind of fun to try to match animals to people :) So far, the response has been positive. One relative even started sending money on her own because she liked the idea of someone in another country learning to help themselves (she's an old farmer, so the whole concept appeals to her)

Didn't mean to go on...just pretty enthusiastic about this organization - they seem pretty well run, too. :)

I'll check it out. The name doesn't sound familiar, but it sounds like the same type of program. I'll take a look at the link. Thank you!

Wow, I just checked out their site and BBB info. It says they spent 20.4% on fundraising. Doesn't that seem like an awful lot? I printed out data to ask DH this evening. Thoughts?
