Nalgene Water Bottles May be Toxic

thanks. After the other thread about refilling water bottles, I am looking into buying some bottles I can wash and reuse. I was leaning toward Nalgene, because they are cheaper. May have to go with the SIGG and just get 1!

Hi Deanie,

I love my SIGG..my only regret was that I only got a 20 oz. I'm surprised at how quickly I go through 20 oz. of water. I would definitely recommend a bigger one so you don't have to constantly refill. There aluminum so your water stays cold a long time.

Thanks Pippa! I am going to get the 1.0 liter bottle. Just not sure what design I want!! Did you get the active bottle top? So many decisions:)!!

I did get the ABT and a mud cap. My dog actually broke the mud cap off and I never replaced it. I mean, the mud cap is nice if you take the bottle a lot of places and you feel that there is any risk of someone sneezing, touching, etc. any part of it. When I first got mine I only used it at home so I didn't really care. Now that I take it to the gym I think I may need that mud cap again. I think that tops are only $1 when you buy a bottle so I got the most 'tricked out' top I could find. I know what you mean...it took me forever to finally decide on the one design that I really wanted. It was actually a lot of fun.:)

One other thing, the ABT actually closes and opens. I didn't realize that when I bought it. So if you don't have a mud cap if you turn the ABT closed it won't spill, etc.

Great. Thanks again Pippa. I plan to use mine at home for working out, but I usually "travel" (do my errands) with a bottle in my tote/pocketbook. So the mud cap will come in handy.

PS: Love the Mets.We are Mets fans too!! DH is from Queens!

Thanks for the information on SIGG bottles. My husband wants one now and adds that SIGG makes great knives as well.

As for me, I've got my eye on a SIGG flask! Shame on me.

Can you put the SIGG bottles in the freezer? I like my water really cold and I will either put my current water bottle in the freezer for an hour or so, or put ice cubes in it. It looks like the diameter of the SIGG bottle opening is too small for ice cubes.

If you're looking for a bottle that keeps water super cold, you should check out the new Klean Kanteen bottles. Non-toxic, keep your water incredibly cold, bottle opening is big enough to fit ice cubes, and they come in different sizes. They're awesome!

Thanks Allison! I'll check those out. :)

FYI: The company that manufactures Nalgene bottles also makes restraint devices for rabbits and other animals used in product testing (like restraining rabbits for the Draize eye test (dropping chemicals in their eyes to see what effect it has) or skin sensitivity tests.

I have a Klean Kanteen, and really like it. But it's hard to take a drink from it without it making a weird noise (suction, gurgly). The SIGG bottles also look good.

I've been reading and I've decided to stick with my Rubbermaid water bottles. They're made of polypropylene (designated by the letters "PP" under the recycling symbol) and can go in the freezer and dishwasher, something you can't do with the SIGG bottles (I think the Klean Kanteen bottles can go in the dishwasher but not the freezer). According to every website I've looked at, there's been no evidence to suggest that polypropylene will leach toxic material.

Most info I've seen lists polypropelene as the safest plastic (after glass and stainless steel, but ahead of #1 plastic), but recently someone posted info here about polypropelene leaching even more toxic chemicals than some other plastics (and California and some European countries calling for its ban?) so I'm no longer sure about it.

Allison,

I had a suspicion from my plastic bottles, because every single time I use them, I felt like hell. Something tasted chemical in my mouth for hours afterwards. I even considered that using dish washing soap might have been the culprit.

Now I know what it is. Jeesh!, I've been doing that for years. Good Lord! Hope nothing happens to me in the future from this.

I also just bought dishes just a few weeks ago from Costco, and I got sick from using the tumblers. Guess what, yep #1 is on them. I'll be taking them back the next time I go into town.

Thank you for this information, I truly thought I was loosing it there for awhile.

I just wanted to add, that my body is very sensitive, I know when something is wrong. Even if I'm talking about a different plastic than what you've mentioned, I can still feel that chemical reaction in my body. I won't be using plastic ever again, just can't trust them.

I seem to recall hearing about a ban on it, too. It seems the primary reason for the ban has to do with the fact that polypropylene isn't biodegradable, and restaurants and grocery stores have been using it to package take out food. I haven't found a single article with regards to safety though. If anyone can provide a link to any articles regarding the safety of polypropylene I would appreciate it.

I agree that the use of polypropylene for take out food items isn't necessary and probably adds significantly to the cost.

ETA that upon further research, #5 PP containers are felt to be perfectly safe but not recyclable. If this is true then why does my Rubbermaid container have a recycling symbol on the bottom? This is all very confusing -- lol!

If you are getting sick from all of these products you should check with your MD about MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity).

PETE #1 is on every soda bottle.

How long does it take for the chemical to leach into the beverage? I kill a liter of water per hour when I'm hiking or working out. The bottle is rinsed prior to refilling.

There was a scare a few years ago about using aluminum for food prep/storage as it supposed to cause alzhiemers. Glass and ceramics unless fired/glazed at a high enough heat allowed lead to leach out.

There's so much toxicity on this planet (always has been) are we going to be afraid to live

I agree, Dave. I'm not suggesting that anyone shouldn't do what is right for them but I sometimes think that we have become so overloaded with information that we don't know what is the safe/right thing anymore. I received one of those forwarded email jokes one time about how the world has changed--ie, people never used to wear bike helmets, we all used to play in the dirt and put our hands in our mouths, etc. and we all turned out fine. While I know that all the advancements that have made in medicine, technology, safety, etc. are great I don't think we're really all that fragile. JMO :)

Dave,

I could have MSC, it's possible, but what could the doctors do for me except tell me not to use plastics? As of now, I've quit using it.

I guess as we grow into our environment we learn more and more about the products we produce, and change accordingly. Until then we can only listen and be aware of our bodies.

I'm not afraid of living, just aware of my surroundings and if something makes me uncomfortable, I try to find out what it is and stop using it. I suppose life can be scary, but I think it's part of the challenges of living. For the most part, if I can take away some of the unpleasantness of it, life is more fun.

Is there any confirmation about the Nalgene company making the rabbit restrain product? Where can I read this from a credible source?

Where is Klean Kanteen, manufactured? In USA or imported? Nalgene company is in Rochester, NY.
