My Yard Is A-Flutter With Goldfinches

>BEARS?!?!! Wow, you are out in the woods! How exciting for
>you kids though!! Mine would go nuts if they ever saw a bear
>in the yard.

When we first moved here 4 years ago, one DS (who is known for coming up with ways to get out of school work with "tall tales") was running around screaming "there's a huge bear out front". I promptly told him to stop with that baloney and get his school work out (we homeschool). After about 5 minutes of this the other boys starting screaming the same thing, so I decided to look. OMG, there was a huge black bear lumbering around near the cabin.

Since they've been on the porch, sunk teeth into the rubbermaid outdoor garbarge cans like they were a piece of taffy and run off with them, etc. Needless to say we have had "nature" training for safety reasons...bears, snakes, skunks, etc. The nice safe deer love the feeders also.

Yikes! We get skunks periodically (and I got sprayed earlier this year, NICE!) and last year we did have this one giant deer in the backyard, which was kind of weird because we live in a very suburban area. However, we are backed by trees and a creek (cleverly disguised drainage ditch) so I guess that attracts wildlife. The REALLY funny thing, though, was my youngest, who was 5 or 6 at the time, who was looking out the window and yelled to me, "Mom, there's a really big dog in the yard!"

I took him to the zoo the next day, LOL.

You guys are killing me today!!!!

LMAO..."I took him to the zoo the next day, LOL."

LOL at Marie and her trip to the zoo.

My best friend lives in Florida and has 3 DS younger than mine. Her DS refer to our family as the "people with the bears" and are afraid to come visit us.:)

Skunks love the bird seed too, as well as racoons. The funniest site is the flying squirrels who hang out if we leave the feeders out after dark. It's hilarious and like watching a circus act gone wild.

Lions and bears, oh my. We once had a smallish black bear run down our driveway, across our front yard and behind the house. We live in a valley and they sometimes cross from one mountain to the next. We also live near a state game lands where the game commission will occasionally release a "problem bear" from elsewhere in the state. We've not had trouble with our garbage or bird feeder though. I have a feeling you are too forested, Melody, to have nesting bluebirds. They like it fairly open.
Shannon, the mountain lion must have been exciting, but scary. My sister used to manage a federal campground in a national forest in Washington State. They had a sick mountain lion maul a child in the campground.
